Ukraine champions Shakhtar Donetsk will try to preserve a one-goal lead from the match in Germany where they beat Wolfsburg in the first leg of the last 16 Europa League and advance to the next round of the competition where they can play vs best of the Basel/Eintracht Frankfurt duel.
Shakhtar used their awesome European experience in win vs Wolfsburg 2-1 away in the first leg. That was a tricky game in which both teams had good times and still managed to miss the penalty. Moraes scored the first of the game for guests who had a penalty a few minutes later but Kovalenko failed to convert from the spot. That gave the German team wings to try to turnaround the match but Weghorst miss from the 11 meters at the end of the first half looked like the final blow for Wolfsburg. Once again Germans showed the power of the will and scored at the start of the second half through Brooks but didn’t have quality and patience for the next goal. Twenty minutes from the end of the game Marcos Antonio scored for Shakhtar win. In the last part of the game team from Ukraine had several counters to score once or twice but their Brasilian players had trouble putting the ball past the good goalkeeper from the Belgium Casteels who saved Wolfsburg from the bigger defeat.
Although they don't play any games in Donetsk for several years due to the political situation in Ukraine, Shakhtar won the title in this country more comfortably than in several last years. They had 23 points more than their biggest rivals Dynamo Kyiv and once again that mix of the players with Brasilian origins and the finest Ukrainian footballers was more than enough for domination in the domestic league.
They showed their skill and composure in the last league matches and they are unbeaten in their last nine competitive matches with seven wins and two draws. They have lost only two competitive home fixtures this season (W15, D3), but both came in the main round of the Champions League with Atalanta and Man City who are still in the knockout phase of this competition. They have a few injury concerns but the biggest would be left-back Ismaily who was involved heavily with offensive duties. Other players that could miss this game are Maksim Malyshev and Vladyslav Vakula.
On the other side, Wolfsburg had a good season in Bundesliga, where they finished as the seventh team in the league that was more competitive than in last years. They had a rough time with rivals from the top of the table but managed to win or draw most games with teams that are in the same or below their level so it is a popular opinion that Wolfsburg needs one or two players in this transfer window to fill some spots in the roster to be in the hunt for the Champions League places in the next season.
They finished their matches in Bundesliga in more than a month so they could be rusty for this game but also they had several injuries at the end of June so few players will be fresh and available. It is interesting to notice that Wolfsburg had nine competitive matches since the loss to Shakthar and won in four, but all those wins were on the road.
Wolfsburg has a long injury list, Kevin Mbabu is unlikely to be available after testing positive for COVID-19 and, surely, Robin Knoche has left Wolfsburg after his contract expired. Several players are not available: Otávio, William, Ignacio Camacho, Mehmedi, Schlager, and Steffen.

Shakhtar is the favorite to win this game because they had competitive matches last month and they want to reach as far they can with this roster full of potential. Júnior Moraes was the Ukrainian Premier League’s top scorer with 20 goals and he could be a big problem for Wolfsburg who will need to reshuffle defense.
Shakhtar to win and over 2,5 goals with Moraes on the scoresheet could be preferable bets for this match.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
