Sheffield Utd endured another miserable 90 minutes this season when Welsh international Gareth Bale helped himself to a hat-trick, with South Korean star Son capping the rout with a curling finish. The performance left their caretaker manager Paul Heckingbottom frustrated, saying he expects more bravery and energy from his side in the face of relegation. Interim boss Paul Heckingbottom says his already-relegated side cannot afford to throw the towel in over their remaining fixtures. The Blades did improve slightly after the half-time break versus Spurs but their performance in the opening period was very poor.
Paul Heckingbottom said he saw the sort of performance he expects in the second half at Tottenham, but it needed the interim manager to “upset” a few of his players at half-time to get it. The Blades have four matches left this season and with Heckingbottom last week confirmed as being on a five-man shortlist to take the job permanently despite only one win from his seven matches, the Blades would be well-advised not to leave him having to resort to “shock treatment” again.
Meanwhile, Palace are coming off a trio of defeats after losing 2-0 to Man City, 2-1 at Leicester and 4-1 when entertaining Chelsea. However, there were moments of merit in all of those difficult fixtures and the Eagles still have plenty to play for. Palace finished last term by picking up just one point in eight games, so Roy Hodgson will be urging his players not to go down the same path. Christian Benteke netted versus Chelsea while Zaha scored at Leicester, so their key forwards still look up for it.
The south Londoners held their own in the first half against runaway champions Man City, but two goals within 83 second-half seconds turned the match in favour of the visitors. Neither battling relegation nor challenging for European qualification, Crystal Palace’s season is petering out and the latest defeat was their fourth top-flight game without a win (D1, L3). and more worryingly their 19th consecutive winless league fixture against a top-six side (D5, L14).
