Sheffield Wed host Cardiff at the Hillsborough (Sheffield) in the 40th round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 5.30 pm (UK) on Monday, April 5. Read our reasons for Sheffield Wed vs Cardiff prediction and betting tips.
Another nail was added to Wednesday’s relegation coffin on Friday as they lost 1-0 to Watford. A Tom Lee's own goal at Watford resigned the Owls to a defeat, which left them 23rd in the table still as they appear to be fighting a losing battle in the Championship now, with relegation into League One looking a real possibility with every passing week. Meanwhile, we got yet another example of why the odds remain firmly against Cardiff making it into the Play-Offs as they lost for the ninth time in 2020/21 on their own ground to Nottingham. But, despite the defeat, other results meant that City remained in eighth place, four points off the play-offs, with the draw between Barnsley and Reading favouring Cardiff.
There were signs of fight in Darren Moore’s side prior to March’s international break as they beat Barnsley, but that’s not been built on - Wednesday are now seven points adrift of safety, with only eight matches of the season still to play. The Owls put in a valiant display against a high-flying Hornets side, but even their best efforts weren’t enough to take anything away from the game. Tom Lees' hotly-disputed seventh-minute own goal condemned the Owls to a 20th league defeat of the season.
Now, Wednesday's slender survival hopes are hanging by a thread. Birmingham's last-gasp victory over Swansea leaves Moore's men seven points adrift of safety. There will be more twists and turns to come over the coming weeks but that was another tough pill to swallow. Even without the six-point deduction, the Owls would be in the bottom three and for them to stand a realistic chance of pulling clear of trouble, they have to beat Cardiff on Easter Monday. End of. The pressure is on and the Owls must rise to the occasion.
As for Cardiff, Mick McCarthy says how Cardiff overcome the disappointment of the home defeat by Nottingham will decide if they win their play-offs fight. The Bluebirs' job of making the top six is a lot harder after the 1-0 home defeat to a stubborn Forest side, with James Garner’s first-half goal enough for the visitors to claim all three points. The Reds only recorded one shot on target the whole game, but they were more clinical and defended well in the second half not allowing Cardiff many chances.
There had been hopes that the international break could lead to recharging of the batteries for at least some of Cardiff’s team, but there was little evidence of that. With nine wins and six draws to show from their nineteen away matches, Cardiff City have shown top six, if not top two, form this season, but at home, it’s been an impersonation of a relegation fighting team. The Bluebirds will hope for a better performance against the Owls but are likely to again be without captain Sean Morrison who missed Friday’s game with a calf strain.

Sheffield Wed meet Cardiff looking for their first league double over the Bluebirds since the 1983/84 season under Howard Wilkinson after celebrating a 2-0 win at Cardiff in the reverse fixture in September. After a run of five straight home wins in a row, Sheffield Wed are winless in their last four at Hillsborough (D1, L3), while Cardiff are without defeat in their eight games on the road so far in 2021 (W5, D3), having lost their last two away league games of 2020.
Cardiff haven’t won consecutive away league games at Hillsborough since 1976, and we expect another low-scoring affair here.
