Slovenia hosts Croatia at Stadion Stožice in the opening match of Group H in the World Cup qualifiers. Read our reasons for Slovenia vs Croatia prediction and betting tips.
Slovenia missed out on a place at the EURO 2021 finals, and, no doubt, they are eager to make amends for the unsuccessful qualifying campaign. Fit-again midfielder Josip Ilicic will be the man to watch in the home team. While the visitors enter this contest as favorites, Slovenia is likely to make this a tough night´s work for the 2018 beaten finalists, with the home side unbeaten in their last 8 matches. At home, Slovenia usually makes it difficult for the stronger nations and have only lost 1 of their last 16 home competitive fixtures. Matjaz Kek’s men are ranked outside of the top-60 in the FIFA list, and they had also failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, as they had to settle for a fourth-place finish in Group 6, below Slovakia, Scotland, and England. They were also part of League C in the 2020-21 UNL and had finished at the bottom of the group in the previous edition.
Slovenia's number one Oblak is likely to be protected by Bojan Jokic once again, as the 100-cap left-back has returned to the squad and will be his side's most experienced player for March's fixtures, so one of them will wear captain’s armband. Serie A is well-represented in Kek's midfield ranks, as Atalanta's Josip Ilicic, Parma's Jasmin Kurtic, and Genoa's Miha Zajc are all included in the squad and in contention to start. Dynamo Kyiv's Benjamin Verbic will not be taking part due to injury, while Hannover's Jaka Bijol is observing a quarantine period and may not be involved despite his selection.
Slovenia: Oblak; Stojanovic, Mevlja, Blazic, Jokic; Kurtic, Zajc; Crnigoj, Ilicic, Bohar; Sporar
The Croats, on the other hand, did well to reach the 2018 FIFA World Cup final, and they are on a quest to repeat the success. Croatia has found life difficult against the likes of Portugal and France but should be heading into this contest despite that poor run of form. The visitors have scored eight goals in four games despite not winning and will be keen to keep their defensive tally as low as possible against inferior opposition. Zlatko Dalic’s men have a 100% unbeaten record against Slovenia over the past three decades. They are unbeaten in nine of their past fourteen overall matches, and they had also scored two or more goals in seven of their last ten fixtures. The last time they failed to score on the road was against Spain in 2018. Croatia should have the quality to end that slump in the form here despite some injuries and pick up three points that could prove to be vital come to the end of their qualifying campaign with Group H looking competitive with both of these sides as well as Russia and Slovakia hoping to qualify for the World Cup.
Rakitic has fond memories of playing against Slovenia, but the Sevilla man has now retired from international duty, while Ante Rebic, Marko Rog, and Bruno Petkovic will not play due to injuries. Vice-captain Domagoj Vida played 45 minutes in November's friendly against Turkey before finding out he had contracted coronavirus, but the 84-cap defender is back in the fold and ready for action this week. With Rebic and Petkovic in the treatment room, Kramaric seems set to lead the line for the visitors, with Mateo Kovacic and Luka Modric anchoring the midfield.
Croatia: Livakovic; Vrsaljko, Lovren, Vida, Barisic; Modric, Kovacic; Brekalo, Vlasic, Perisic; Kramaric

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
