SOUTHAMPTON VS ARSENAL MATCH ANALYSIS
Southampton host Arsenal in the Premier League three days after they had played out a fourth-round FA Cup tie at St. Mary's Stadium on Saturday. The Saints’ 1-0 win ended Mikel Arteta's side’s six-game unbeaten run in all competitions, since losing 4-1 to Manchester City in the League Cup quarterfinal in December. Prior to the FA Cup exit, Arsenal had beaten Newcastle 3-0 with a splendid second-half performance to climb to 10th in the standings.
After two consecutive goalless draws in the league and a huge 1-0 win against Liverpool, the Saints lost 2-0 to Leicester at the King Power Stadium. Nevertheless, they have now staged a remarkable turnaround from their struggles at the start of the last campaign. Even though they are in 9th place, Southampton could go top-four with a win here and a game in hand. Having Ings back will also boost their chances in front of a goal when presented with them.
Southampton made six changes against the last season’s FA Cup winners to the team that saw off Shrewsbury Town 2-0 in the rescheduled third-round match on January 19. The Saints were rewarded for their attacking intent in the opening period when Gabriel turned in Kyle Walker-Peters' cross into his own net in the 24th minute. They thoroughly deserved to book a fifth-round trip to Wolves even if they were required to hold on as the minutes ticked down.
As for Arsenal, they are in a much better place than they were a month ago. The Gunners are winning football matches, playing well while keeping clean sheets. Mikel Arteta has got Arsenal out of their slump and it has coincided with giving some of his younger squad members the chance to prove their worth. The likes of Emile Smith Rowe, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Martinelli have taken the bull by the horns and turned Arsenal’s fortunes around.
Arteta made seven changes from the team sent out to beat Newcastle 3-0 in the Premier League on January 18 but were knocked out of the FA Cup courtesy of a first-half own goal against a strong Southampton side. It was the first goal Arsenal had conceded in 508 minutes as they suffered the first loss in seven matches. Mikel Arteta's Gunners side were tepid as an attacking force but Aubameyang, midfielder Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka should all be in the starting XI against the Saints for the second time in three days.

Southampton have won one of their last 10 Premier League matches against Arsenal (D4 L5) way back in December 2018, while Arsenal are looking to record back-to-back away Premier League wins against the Saints for the first time since winning in March and August 1997 under Arsène Wenger.
After a run of scoring in 12 consecutive PL games, Southampton have failed to score in four of their last five in the competition. Saints are looking to avoid consecutive league defeats for the first time since their opening two games of this campaign. As for Arsenal, following a run of seven league games without a win in November/December, the Gunners have won four of their last five (D1), shipping just one goal in that run and scoring 11.
