SOUTHAMPTON VS ASTON VILLA MATCH ANALYSIS
After playing Arsenal twice within three days, Southampton progressed in the FA Cup with a 1-0 win at the St. Mary’s, but Arsenal got better of them on Tuesday, winning 3-1 at the same stadium in the Premier League. With that latest defeat, the stuttering Saints have fallen down the standings to 11th, increasing the gap from the top-six teams. As for Aston Villa, they have bounced back from the Man City loss after beating Newcastle 2-0 at home but were on the receiving end in a 3-2 defeat at Burnley in midweek. The Villans have a solitary win in five in all competitions (D1, L3), but with two games in hand, while being in 10th, they are still on course to get into the mix for one of the European berths.
After two consecutive goalless draws in the league and a huge 1-0 win against Liverpool, the Saints lost to Leicester and Arsenal. Nevertheless, they have now staged a remarkable turnaround from their struggles of the last campaign. Even though they are in 11th place, Southampton could still catch up with the pack near the top with a win here as they have a game in hand. Having Ings back will also boost their chances in front of a goal when presented with them.
Against Arsenal in midweek, Stuart Armstrong put Southampton ahead from a wonderful delivery by captain James Ward-Prowse in the 3rd minute, but the lead lasted just five minutes, as Nicolas Pepe leveled. England winger Bukayo Saka put the Gunners ahead after going past keeper McCarthy before he picked out Lacazette to seal the points for the visitors. The Saints went into the game on the back of five clean sheets in six league and cup games but struggled at the back against Arsenal without the presence of the suspended Ryan Bertrand and the injured Kyle Walker-Peters.
As for Villa, after playing a fourth straight match against a team from last season’s top four, with the results not going their way (D1, L3), the hosts were without a win in 2021 prior to the Newcastle match. That’s after registering 11 points in the PL during December - their most in a single month since April 2010. They have now recorded 29 points after 18 games, a huge improvement on the 15 they managed after 18 rounds during 2019/20.
However, against Burnley on Wednesday, Chris Wood headed in a late winner as Burnley came from behind twice to grab an unlikely victory against Aston Villa in a thrilling match at Turf Moor. For Villa, who stay 10th, they will be wondering how they failed to take all three points and then left Lancashire empty-handed. Villa's misses proved costly as they remarkably failed to score more from 45 shots - their most against an opponent in a top-flight campaign since 2010-11.

Saints have now suffered consecutive league defeats for the first time since their opening two games of this campaign, but have reached the halfway stage of their season with a healthy 29 points in the bank, although it is now one win in seven top-flight games for Hasenhuttl's side. There is much to admire about the way they have gone about their business this season but could do with little consistency at the moment.
As for the Villans, sitting in mid-table on 29 points alongside their hosts, their 3-2 defeat to Burnley saw them fail to convert scoring first into a victory for the first time this PL campaign (W8). On the other hand, may not relish this trip to St Mary’s given they haven’t won any of their last four competitive fixtures here (D1, L3), conceding an average of 2.75 goals per game.
