Southampton host Brighton at St. Mary’s Stadium (Southampton) in the 28th round of the Premier League and the match kicks off at 12 pm (UK) on Sunday, March 14. Read our reasons for Southampton vs Brighton prediction and betting tips.
Southampton were unsurprisingly swept aside 5-2 by Premier League champions-elect Man City in midweek, but this South Coast derby ought to be a more competitive - and winnable - affair even for a side that’s only triumphed once in six league matches (D1, L4). Meanwhile, no strangers to letting leads slip, Brighton’s last-gasp 2-1 defeat to Leicester on March 6 saw them drop the 17th point from a winning position this term, and they start this round with only goal difference separating them from the relegation zone after five straight winless league fixtures (D2, L3).
Southampton picked up their first league win since early January when obliging 2-0 at Sheffield Utd and then gave Man City a decent test in midweek. Although ultimately going down 5-2 to the runaway leaders, Saints played their part in an entertaining encounter, with James Ward-Prowse scoring from the spot and Che Adams also on target. Being without Danny Ings, Theo Walcott and Oriol Romeu is a blow, while Moussa Djenepo suffered a slight groin strain at Etihad Stadium.
The last time these two sides faced each other, back in December, Danny Ings secured all three points for the Saints, sinking an 81st minute penalty to earn his side a 2-1 win at the AMEX. They will look to repeat the performance at the Etihad where for the first 15 minutes Southampton played like they were the Pep Guardiola side. They were fabulous. However, it didn't last though. Once you get past their high press, Saints seem to have a soft centre, and they seem to concede a lot of goals.
Brighton's problem is at the other end of the pitch and, despite some decent performances, their run of results has left them in the thick of the relegation battle. They will feel their performances have deserved far more than their haul of only two points from their past five league games, but maybe it is time for their boss Graham Potter to just make sure of getting a draw to stop the rot.
The Seagulls are only out of the relegation zone on goal difference after suffering three straight defeats and going five league games without a win. They have been the better team in general play during several of those matches, but a yield of just three goals is where the problem lies. Brighton should enjoy playing against a Southampton side that is always willing to come out, but doubts still remain over whether they will take enough of their chances.

Southampton meet Brighton previously unbeaten in all seven of their Premier League meetings with the Seagulls (W3 D4), more than they’ve faced any other side without defeat in the competition. The Saints are also looking to complete their first league double over Brighton since the 2005/06 campaign when the sides were in the Championship after Saints won 2-1 when these teams met at Amex Stadium three months ago.
From leading the table at one point to looking over their shoulder with 10 games to go, Southampton will know that two more victories may yet be required if they are to survive and we tip them for the victory here.
