Southampton host Burnley at the St. Mary’s Stadium (Southampton) in the 30th round of the Premier League and the match kicks off at 12 pm (UK) on Sunday , April 4. Read our reasons for Southampton vs Burnley prediction and betting tips.
Ralph Hasenhuttl's players left on the international break having booked the club a spot at Wembley for April's FA Cup semi-finals with a comfortable and commanding 3-0 win at Championship rivals Bournemouth. For Saints, things were much improved from their 2-1 league defeat against Brighton at home the weekend before. They should be confident coming into match against Burnley who ended a run of five league games without a win (D4, L1) and moved to 15th place, seven points clear of the bottom three, with a 2-1 win at Everton on March 13. The result also meant Burnley did the Merseyside double, having beaten Liverpool at Anfield in January, with the Clarets now facing just three top-half sides in their remaining nine fixtures.
After Sunday's Brighton defeat, Hasenhuttl pointed the finger at himself. He questioned whether he had put across the right message to his players, uncertain as to whether he had struck the correct tone. As he spoke to the media that night, he appeared pensive as he pondered his plan for the week ahead at Staplewood knowing that a communication restart was key. He then took them onto the field at Staplewood to work on what went wrong against Brighton and what they can do better at Bournemouth.
With only one win, one draw and as mush as 10 defeats since the 1-0 win against Liverpool on January 16, things should only get better for Southampton over the coming weeks as they prepare for a massive April run of fixtures, so crucial in fact that it almost dwarfs a March that was billed to be season-defining for Southampton. Walcott and Ings have, during the break, returned to first-team training in a big boost for their manager, but even without them, Saints looked reinvigorated, a side full of chance-creators against Bournemouth last time out.
As for Burnley, the Clarets were superb for much of their win against Everton, confident in attack, creative and combative in midfield and calm and composed at the back. Sean Dyche's side zipped the ball around Goodison with ease and on another day could easily have scored four or five. Chris Wood and Matej Vydra's partnership up front continues to blossom while the return of Johann Berg Gudmundsson on the right brings benefits and balance to the midfield.
Two lovely goals from Chris Wood and Dwight McNeil secured Sean Dyche’s side the three points and moved them one step closer to another season or top flight football. It was perhaps the most complete display of the season with the Clarets showing their attacking flair as well as defensive resilience. Burnley may not have an enviable away record but they show in patches what they’re capable of against the league's best, therefore, Southampton will not have it easy on Sunday.
