SOUTHAMPTON VS LIVERPOOL MATCH ANALYSIS
The Saints come into this match on the back of two consecutive goalless draws – against Fulham away on Boxing Day and West ham at home in midweek. It’s S their fourth winless game in a row (D3, L1), leaving the Saints in 9th place with as many points (26) as the four teams above them. With a win against defending Champions, they could finish the week in top-four, but Liverpool will have a say in that, as well. Klopp’s men will also look to bounce from two draws against lowly West Brom (1-1) and Newcastle (0-0). The gap between the leaders and the rest of the pack has shrunk and they will be up for this one for sure.
Even though they are in 9th place, Southampton are still only three points away from the top-four. However, they have struggled in the absence of Danny Ings, but he has now returned from the injury and will be keen to start against old club Liverpool on Monday. However, the Saints are still without duo Jannik Vestergaard and Nathen Redmond. Having Ings and Armstrong, who was dropped to the bench last time out, back, will help them take their chances in front of a goal when presented with them, as they have now failed to score in three of their last four games.
The latest such game was on Tuesday when West Ham effectively nullified the Saints threat for most parts. The fact that Hasenhuttl had to work from home via a video link, as he is self-isolating after a member of his household tested positive for coronavirus, didn’t help either. His side were unable to claim the victory they needed to move into the Premier League's top four, despite dominating on the ball. Things do not get any easier for Hasenhuttl's side as they look to rediscover their form, with Liverpool and Leicester to come next.
The Reds, on the other hand, will be looking to recover from disappointing and frustrating draws against WBA and Newcastle. They still top the league table, but Jurgen Klopp's side missed the chance to see some light between themselves and the chasing pack after an uninspiring performance against Sam Allardyce's side and more encouraging, but still ineffective outing at St.James’ Park.
As expected, in midweek, they sat back and defended in numbers, having only 27% of possession in the opening 45 minutes, with Steve Bruce switching to 5-4-1. They ended a run of five consecutive defeats against Liverpool as Mohamed Salah missed two key opportunities either side of half-time at St James' Park, while Newcastle's Fabian Schar denied Sadio Mane a tap-in with a timely clearance off the goalline in the 80th minute. The Reds end the year where they started it but a second consecutive draw against a team in the bottom half will hurt them for sure.

Southampton have lost each of their last six Premier League meetings with Liverpool, scoring just twice and conceding 17 goals in these games.
Though Hasenhuttl’s side were unable to find a winner, Tuesday's draw still means only Liverpool, Man Utd, Leicester, and Everton have won more points in the Premier League than Southampton in 2020. That statistic serves as further testament to Saints' remarkable turnaround from their struggles at the start of the 2019-20 campaign. However, Hasenhuttl will now be wary of his side fading away following their excellent start to this campaign.
On the other hand, Liverpool’s away form in the league has not been great, but they snapped a six-game winless league run on the road with an emphatic 7-0 win over Crystal Palace on December 19 and if they find their feet and are only half as clinical on Monday night, it will take a monumental effort from Southampton to prevent Liverpool from winning their first game of the new calendar year.
