SOUTHAMPTON VS SHREWSBURY MATCH ANALYSIS
The Saints come into this match on the back of two consecutive goalless draws – against Fulham away on Boxing Day and West ham at home in midweek and a huge 1-0 win against Liverpool on Monday. It’s their first win after the fourth winless game in a row (D3, L1) and a League One visitors couldn’t have picked a worse time to visit St.Mary. However, Shrewsbury are not doing that bad themselves. They are in 17th in the League One table and have won four of their last five games (D1). Their last two fixtures were postponed due to a coronavirus outbreak in Crew’s and Oxford’s sides and will be well-rested for this cup tie.
Even though they are in 6th place, Southampton are level with Tottenham in 4th. The Saints are still without duo Jannik Vestergaard and Nathen Redmond. However, having Ings and Armstrong back will help them take their chances in front of a goal when presented with them, as was the case against the defending champions on Monday. Saints' turnaround from their struggles at the start of the 2019-20 campaign is remarkable. However, Hasenhuttl will now be wary of his side fading away following their excellent start to this campaign. When it comes to FA Cup, last year they exited at the early stages, in Round 4 in a replay match against Tottenham, after knocking out Huddersfield in Round 3. They will certainly hope they can do better this time around.
As for the visitors, Steve Cotterill replaced the sacked Sam Ricketts at the end of November and inherited a side sitting 23rd League One, just one point above rock-bottom Wigan. But Town’s transformation under the former Birmingham boss been staggering. Undefeated in seven league games, that run includes impressive wins over high-flying Hull, Lincoln, and Doncaster. It means Shrewsbury are now eight points behind sixth-placed Charlton and Chapman believes the team has the potential to continue rising up the table. They were eliminated from the FA Cup last year in Round 4 after a 1-0 defeat against Liverpool, but they were better than Bradford City, Mansfield Town, and Bristol City last time around. The Shrews are due to travel to Premier League side Southampton but any further positive cases within the squad could see the tie in jeopardy.
