Southampton host Tottenham on a second Premier League day at St.Mary's Stadium on Sunday, September 20 and the match kicks off at 12pm (UK).
At the start of this 2020/2021 campaign the Saints were looking to keep the momentum from a really strong finish of the last season. Sadly for the Saints, in their season opener against Crystal Palace they looked like a disjointed side they were at the beginning of the last year. They didn't create much in a 1-0 defeat to the Eagles, but will look to pick themselves up against Tottenham in their home debut on Sunday.
The Spurs had an equally disappointing opener last week when they tamely lost to Everton (0-1). They were too pondering and slow from the blocks and Jose Mourinho, who helped them finish sixth last year, will have to address the issues and make sure they bring the game to Southampton by making them more aggressive and direct. Apart from Harry Kane who is still looking for some match fitness, they have Son, Dele Alli and Moura which should be enough creativity to get something from the Southampton game.
Southampton finished last season on a high note. Losing midfielder Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg to Tottenham, shouldn't be a real stumbling block for this group, with the rest of the squad, including Jack Stephens, James Ward-Prowse and Stuart Armstrong still there. Add Danny Ings who almost finished the season with the Golden Boot to his name, and you have a strong core of the team who shouldn't find themselves in a similar situation to last year's.
If Armstrong is fit for the Saints on Sunday, Hasenhuttl will play in a 4-2-3-1 formation without too much tempering with it like he did last week. Southampton do have another fixture in midweek in the Carabao Cup against Championship play-off final losers Brentford, which will come handy to tune the squad before the weekend. Their pressing need to improve and once they go up the pitch there shouldn't be so much space left behind the full backs which Tottenham will know how to exploit and punish.
At the weekend Spurs played second fiddle to Everton over the 90 minutes. Kane was ineffective, Alli was replaced at half-time and only Son was up to the task, creating scoring opportunities and involving other players. Matt Doherty and Hojbjerg were given their debuts at right back and midfield, but they didn't stand out in an overall disappointing performance.
Most of all, Tottenham lacked intensity, with the ball and without it. Most of the time they just lumped the ball forward and, when defending, didn't press or chased the ball. With this defeat hey have now ended their unbeaten run of six games from the back end of the last season. To be fair, they probably aren't up-to-speed yet and on true fitness levels after a short pre-season, but they should be in better shape nevertheless.

And finally for some stats and facts. These two teams last met in February in the FA Cup match which ended in a 3-2 Tottenham win. Over the course of the last ten years they faced each other 18 times with Southampton winning only 3 games to Tottenham's 12. 3 games were without the winner. In that time they have averaged 3.28 goals per game, with Tottenham outscoring the Saints with 2.06 goals per match to Southampton's 1.22. Interestingly, whichever side were the visiting team, they prevailed in 66% of these games. Southampton's away record last year was much better than their home record, where they won only 5 times in 15 matches. Spurs were also poor away from home with 4 wins from 22 fixtures, and to summarize, if neither of the two teams puts in the shift, the game will probably be decided by a single moment of brilliance.
