With a Euros just a week away, two favorites for high places in the next tournament, Spain and Portugal will play this Friday a friendly at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid. Read our Spain vs Portugal prediction and betting tips.
Spain is trying to change something after several tournaments without a big result. They are in the middle of the transition, head coach Luis Enrique has faith in the youth and with just a few common names will head into this EURO.
Spain left out of squad team captain Sergio Ramos because of lack of fitness and tough season regarding injuries, and players like Busquets, Alba, and Alcantara must help younger guys on such big occasions. Enrique’s men were unbeaten in 21 of their previous 22 overall fixtures, and they have won every single appearance at home since November of 2018. They had scored a total of 36 goals from their past ten home games.
Spain secured a 3-1 win in their last game at home to Kosovo but will be expecting a much tougher 90-minutes against Portugal who are more than willing to grab a big result before EURO. The other big names missing from this Spanish squad include Navas, Carvajal, and Asensio and most of the media are judging the final roster.
The hosts look a little short up-front but will be hoping that Morata finds his form ahead of the Euros. Busquets will command the midfield and will secure his 123rd cap if he plays against Portugal on Friday. Alba is the most experienced defender in the squad with 72-caps and de Gea looks set to continue in goal and could add to his 45 caps on Friday.
Spain (4-3-3): David de Gea, Marcos Llorente, Diego Llorente, Pau Torres, Jose Luis Gaya, Fabian Ruiz, Sergio Busquets, Thiago Alcantara, Ferran Torres, Gerard Moreno, Pablo Sarabia
Portugal was invincible in 41 of their 45 overall match-ups, and they had scored two or more goals in 12 of their last 17 fixtures with great tradition as visiting team as they have also lost just twice on the road since 2017. Fernando Santos’s men are the reigning European as well as Nations League champions. They too are part of League A in the UNL but missed out on a semis-berth this season, as they finished second in Group A3, behind France. They go into this tournament with a much stronger squad than the one that triumphed in France five years ago.
The likes of Ruben Dias, Bruno Fernandes, and Joao Felix have since emerged with the latter close to play significant minutes in his stadium on Friday night, despite a slightly disappointing season on a personal level with Atleti. Cristiano Ronaldo is also still there and as central to Portugal’s plans as ever.
Portugal ran out 3-1 winners at Luxembourg last time out and will be looking to build up some momentum with a positive result on Friday. Gomes and Soares both missed out on selection for the Euros but there are plenty of great names in the Portugal side.
Ronaldo captains the team at the age of 36 and has already scored over 100-goals for his country. Another veteran, Moutinho, is the vice-captain but could struggle to get into a midfield lineup that includes Silva, Fernandes, Pereira, Carvalho, Sanches, and Neves. Pepe, who is 38 years young, has 113 caps and looks set to start at the back in another big tournament, alongside Dias or Fonte, while Guerreiro and Cancelo are the likely full-backs. Rui Patricio will earn his 93rd cap if he starts in goal on Friday.
Portugal (4-2-3-1): Rui Patricio, Nelson Semedo, Jose Fonte, Ruben Dias, Raphael Guerreiro, Joao Moutinho, Danilo Pereira, Goncalo Guedes, Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Jota, Cristiano Ronaldo

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
