Spezia’s form has fallen away recently, as they are without a win in five, and Cagliari is transformed under Leonardo Semplici. Read our reasons for Spezia vs Cagliari prediction and betting tips.
Injuries and COVID cases continue to pile up for Spezia, who are hovering just above the relegation zone and cannot afford to be complacent. For all the beautiful football on show under Vincenzo Italiano, results aren’t coming regularly enough. The promising coach said he saw ‘something I don’t like’ in Spezia’s formation during the second half against Atalanta. ‘We must fix this’. The visitors did well to stop Atalanta from creating any big chances in the first 45 minutes, but the Orobici ran away with the game when they grabbed the lead through Mario Pasalic before Luis Muriel scored the second of the match only two minutes later.
Pasalic added the third and Roberto Piccoli’s consolation goal was not enough to make Italiano content after the 3-1 defeat in Bergamo. “We are starting to do something I don’t like,” Italiano told the media after the final whistle. “We play 45 minutes well and then less for the rest of the match. “We can’t be satisfied with setting an excellent lap time, so it’s dangerous, we have to fix this aspect.”
Spezia (4-3-3): Zoet; Vignali, Ismajli, Erlic, Bastoni; Sena, Ricci, Maggiore; Verde, Piccoli, Gyasi

Injured: Saponara, Provedel, Krapikas, Estevez, Nzola
The Sardinians lost just once since the new coach took over, and that was against Juventus to a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick. Leonardo Pavoletti and Charalampos Lykogiannis return from suspension, although Giovanni Simeone could still retain his place up front. Leonardo Semplici refused to discuss the Cristiano Ronaldo potential red card, instead, he blamed Cagliari for ‘the wrong attitude’ against Juventus. This was his first defeat on the Cagliari bench after seven points from three games since replacing Eusebio Di Francesco. Giovanni Simeone got a goal back in the second half, ending his drought, but the match was finished by a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick in the opening 32 minutes.
There were also suggestions from former referees that Ronaldo could easily have been sent off for a high foot on goalkeeper Alessio Cragno, leaving the shot-stopper with a cut to the chin. “I have never talked about referees and I am not going to start now,” Semplici told the media Italia when asked about the incident. “We allowed Juve too many counter-attacks and left ourselves open to their strengths. We didn’t keep the right distances and had the wrong attitude from the start. I take responsibility because evidently, I didn’t manage to drill into the team how important our attitude was in this game. I think ultimately it was more our fault that we lost rather than giving credit to Juve, even if we did react to the break. There’s a long way to go this season and we must improve a great deal.”
Cagliari (3-5-2): Cragno; Ceppitelli, Godin, Rugani; Nandez, Marin, Nainggolan, Duncan, Lykogiannis; Simeone, Joao Pedro
Suspended: None
Injured: Rog, Sottil, Klavan

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
