Spezia will mark their first-ever Serie A match as they host Sassuolo on Sunday at the Orogel Stadium in Cesena.
Because Vincenzo Italiano’s team had to go through the Serie B promotion play-offs their week 1 fixture with Udinese was postponed until September 30. There are still issues, as their stadium needs restructuring work to meet top-flight standards, so this historic first match will be at the Cesena. In 2008, the club was forced to declare bankruptcy after being relegated from the second tier and was refounded, starting the 2008-09 season in Italy's fourth tier. Spezia is the 68th different club to play in Serie A. Only six were able to win their all-time debuts (Legnano in 1930, Sampierdarenese in 1934, Salernitana in 1947, Como in 1949, Empoli in 1986, and Chievo in 2001). Vincenzo Italiano's side is favorites to be relegated, but the team hopes to defy all odds after a quite an active transfer window so far.
The team has been hugely transformed, including Cristian Dell’Orco and Riccardo Marchizza on loan from Sassuolo. Ex-PSV Eindhoven goalkeeper Joeren Zoet and former Lecce and Cagliari striker Diego Farias are among those bringing in top-flight experience. Similar to Benevento the strong suit of this team is most likely going to be their defense. The performance of the last line with Martin Erlic at CB will be crucial to them having any chance of staying up in Serie A.
Kevin Agudelo is set to make his first start for the newly-promoted side in the front three of a 4-3-3 system.
Spezia (4-3-3): Zoet; Mattiello, Erlic, Dell’Orco, Sala; Bartolomei, Deiola, M Ricci; Agudelo, Galabinov, Farias
Suspended: Maggiore, Terzi
Injured: Capradossi, Marchizza, Mastinu
Sassuolo were held 1-1 by Cagliari in their opening game of the season, they were dominating the possession but that was not enough to get three points. They created many chances but failed to convert and Simeone scored for just one that Cagliari created at the other end. Only a late Mehdi Bourabia free-kick managed to avoid defeat.
Sassuolo has an extremely strong midfield with the opportunity for upsets. The way Sassuolo played against the big boys at times was often better than some of the teams above them on this list. They do not have the star power or depth of those teams, but on any given game day they have a chance at winning. Sassuolo finished eighth in Serie A last term - their highest top-flight finish since they placed sixth in the 2015/16 season - and will hope to kick on this time around.
Keeping hold or replacing Locatelli will be the key for them and also retaining Boga who made a difference in many matches the last term. Locatelli is the motor of that midfield sparking many of the deadly counter-attacks but he is on the radar of the many teams in Italy and abroad. If this team can shore up the defense and get production from the bench they could easily slip into the top 6 or 7 for this upcoming season but the strikers must have better conversion rate percentages.
Sassuolo will also be hoping to avoid the bad start they had last season, only winning two of their first seven league games. Vlad Chiriches will start in central defense for the Neroverdi, while Francesco Magnanelli and Jeremie Boga are still injured.
Sassuolo (4-2-3-1): Consigli; Muldur, Chiriches, Ferrari, Kyriakopoulos; Obiang, Locatelli; Berardi, Djuricic, Haraslin; Caputo
Suspended: None
Injured: Boga, Magnanelli

It should be a fun match to watch with Spezia trying to win for the fans at the start of the season and pushing forward against a side that knows how to punish any open space. Over 2,5 goals and away team wins are the most reasonable bets.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
