STOCKPORT VS WEST HAM MATCH ANALYSIS
After reaching this stage of the competition for the first time since 2006/07 on December 19 after a 3-1 win against Guiseley, Jim Gannon’s National League side have been rewarded with a game against Premier League West Ham at Edgeley Park who enter the competition at this stage. However, both teams will face coronavirus tests ahead of Monday's FA Cup third-round tie. Stockport had a number of positive results in November and have had their most recent league game against Eastleigh postponed due to cases in the Eastleigh camp, while the Hammers head into this match on the back of a 1-0 win against Everton at Goodison Park.
Stockport County’s FA Cup third-round tie with West Ham will stir memories for the club’s supporters. The League Cup replay between the sides in 1996 was just one of a number of magical moments in that season under David Jones. They went all the way to the semi-finals that year, winning promotion to the second tier too, where Stockport would stay for five seasons before beginning their slow decline. But optimism has returned to Edgeley Park last year. After promotion back to the National League under club legend Jim Gannon, who played in that win over West Ham, new owner Mark Stott, a successful Stockport businessman, has not only cleared the debts but has grand plans for the future of the club. There has been a talk of a seven-year plan to return to the Championship, but before all that, there is an FA Cup tie to enjoy.
David Moyes, on the other hand, can take a break from the challenges of life in the Premier League when he travels with his West Ham side to face Stockport. The pressures of ensuring the Hammers maintain their current form and preserve their place in the top flight has been immense for the manager, but the trip to Edgeley Park offers a different type of challenge, but just as testing. Moyes has to decide if some players need a rest – a chance to recharge the batteries. He certainly won’t be the only Premier League manager wrestling with the same problem. West Ham have been victims of cup upsets before. Defeats at the hands of Torquay United, Tranmere Rovers, Wrexham, Grimsby Town, and Luton, to name a few, have all come with regular first-team players in the line-up. Obviously, it’s not necessarily about fielding your top players, it’s more about getting the attitude right, no matter who plays.

This is the first time Stockport County and West Ham have faced in any competition since December 1996, with Stockport winning 2-1 in a League Cup fourth round replay, while the last FA Cup encounter between Stockport and West Ham was all the way back in January 1958.
Stockport have lost their last five FA Cup ties against top-flight teams, last knocking out a top-flight opponent back in January 1994 against QPR, when County were a third-tier side. This is West Ham’s first FA Cup meeting with a non-league side since January 1998, beating Emley 2-1.
