Stoke host Derby at the Bet365 Stadium (Stoke on Trent) in the 38th round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 3 pm (UK) on Saturday, March 20. Read our reasons for Stoke vs Derby prediction and betting tips.
Stoke are still searching for their first away win since December 2 as they recorded a goalless Championship draw at Cardiff. After their eleventh game in a row away from home without victory the Potters are now in 11th place, left twelve points behind the play-off spots as their season peters out. Against Derby at the weekend they’ll be looking to win their third home match in four (L1). Meanwhile, the Rams are currently 19th in the Championship after a difficult season. They are eight points clear of third bottom Rotherham, who have four games in hand, and fought back to draw 2-2 with Brentford on Tuesday night. The point lifted the Rams onto 40 and plumped the cushion between themselves and the bottom three to eight points.
Stoke applied the brakes to their four-match losing streak away from home by claiming a deserved point against Cardiff. The Potters were good value for their goalless draw at The Cardiff City Stadium and could have claimed far more of the spoils if they had been more clinical in front of goal. The point came at a cost, however, as Steven Fletcher was forced out of the action midway through the first half, which may leave him a doubt for Saturday’s home date with Derby.
However, the Potters have been a far cry recently from the team who kept 16 clean sheets in the first 26 games of the season. That’s five out of the last seven away games when Stoke have conceded at least two, letting in 15 in all, so it’s something that needs to be sorted out with Derby to come up next on Saturday, as the Potters have now slipped into negative goal difference. On a more positive side, Martin O’Neill will be satisfied with the manner in which his players reacted to their defeat at Middlesbrough four days earlier.
As for Derby, they have failed to score in 18 of their 37 league fixtures. Only 27 goals scored in those matches needs no further comment. The alarming statistics are why Derby have been in the bottom half of the Championship all season, and in the bottom six for most of it. Rooney will have to juggle his options again for the trip to the mid-table Stoke on Saturday. There are 9 games to go and the aim has not changed. Reach safety as soon as possible.
For that matter, Wayne Rooney will be pleased with his team’s effort against the Bees. Purpose, passion and controlled aggression were all there as Derby rediscovered their bite. The Rams rallied from 2-0 down to draw with promotion-chasers Brentford on home soil. Everything Derby did not want to be in the first half, they were. Everything they wanted to be second half, they were. In the end, a draw stretched their winless run to six matches, but the bigger picture of this result and how it was achieved means this point could prove hugely valuable.

Stoke meet Derby having previously lost just three of their last 28 home league matches against the Rams (W16, D9). However, Derby are unbeaten in their last four league matches against Stoke (W1, D3).
The hosts have only one won of their last six in the Championship (W1 D1 L4), failing to score in each of their last two, while Derby are without a win in their last six league games (D3, L3) – landing just 12 shots on target across those fixtures and never more than three in a game.
We expect a cagey affair at the Bet365 Stadium and expect Derby to be happier to come away with a point here, with Stoke stuck with not much to play for. BettingKick’s Stoke vs Derby prediction is: Under 2.5 goals
