VfB Stuttgart will be hoping the absence of striker Nicolas Gonzalez does not prove too costly as the mighty Bayern Munich and their prolific Pole Robert Lewandowski come to town on Saturday afternoon.
Stuttgart fell to a 3-0 defeat the last time the record Bundesliga champions were in town, in September 2018, but they may take the receipt from Werder Bremen's bold display against Bayern last week when they were unlucky not to take all three points in a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena. Pellegrino Matarazzo's promoted side have only lost once all season, on Matchday 1, although a run of four straight draws has prevented them from getting in among the European contenders. Stuttgart is unbeaten in their last seven games (two wins, five draws) and is the most attack-minded promoted side in eight years with 16 goals scored to date.
The loss of Gonzalez to a knee injury is a heavy blow. The Argentina striker, who recently extended his contract until 2024, had just netted in successive outings against Schalke, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Hoffenheim, but will now be sidelined for several weeks. Sasa Kalajdzic will lead the line in his absence, although the Austria international has gone off the boil after his sizzling start to the season, failing to score in five matches. Left wing-back Borna Sosa could also return to the side in place of French teenager Tanguy Coulibaly.
Stuttgart: Kobel - Stenzel, Anton, Kempf - Silas, Endo, Mangala, Sosa - Didavi, Castro (c) - Kalajdzic
Out: Al Ghaddioui (pelvis), Cisse (groin), Gonzalez (knee), Thommy (elbow),
Doubtful: Awoudja (Achilles tendon)
Coach: Pellegrino Matarazzo
Bayern has only had a few days to prepare for this game after Wednesday's UEFA Champions League win over Salzburg, which guaranteed them passage to the knockout stage and top spot in Group A. Lewandowski paved the way for a 3-1 victory as he netted what was already his 14th goal of the season in all competitions. The 32-year-old had a rare off-day against Bremen last week, but he still tops the Bundesliga scoring charts with 11 goals and will be looking to open up a gap on his nearest challenger for the Torjägerkanone, Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland (10). The Reds have only won three of their last 10 Bundesliga matches this month (three draws, four defeats). In Lewandowski (11 goals) and Thomas Müller (five assists), Bayern has the league's top two attackers so far in 2020/21.
Benjamin Pavard took a knock to his ankle against Salzburg but Hansi Flick is confident he will start against his former side, while fellow Frenchmen Lucas Hernandez and Corentin Tolisso are pushing to slot back into the starting XI. Hernandez is yet to taste defeat in the Bundesliga in 25 games. With him on the pitch this season, Bayern have only conceded a goal every 110 minutes on average; without him, they've let one in every 35 minutes.
Further up the pitch, Leroy Sane and Douglas Costa are alternative options for Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry on the wings. Alphonso Davies has returned to individual training but he is unlikely to feature in the Bundesliga for at least several weeks, and possibly not until after the winter break.
Bayern: Neuer (c) - Pavard, Boateng, Alaba, Hernandez - Tolisso, Goretzka - Gnabry, Müller, Coman - Lewandowski
Out: Davies (ankle), Kimmich (knee)
Doubtful: Hernandez (pelvis), Sarr (thigh)
Coach: Hansi Flick

Bayern is trying to find the balance between performances and fatigue after a tough schedule from the end of the last season and busy from the start of the new is taking tools. Stuttgart is more than a decent rival and both teams to score is the most reasonable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
