VfB Stuttgart and SC Freiburg face each other on Saturday at Mercedes-Benz-Arena in the 1st round of the Bundesliga.
Stuttgart bounced back to the top flight at the first attempt like a second-placed team from Bundesliga 2. Five-time German champions finished 10 points behind last season's champions Arminia Bielefeld. Argentina striker Gonzalez was their top scorer with 14 of 62 league goals and had good support from Castro and Wamangituka who backed him with six assists each. The 22-year-old picked up an injury in pre-season, so he will not play in the first round but Wamangituka showed he knows how to perform upfront and stepped up, scored a goal against third-tier Hansa Rostock in the DFB Cup. On-loan Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos has also been struggling with an injury of late, but fellow new arrivals Waldemar Anton and Wataru Endo should make their Bundesliga debuts. American coach Pellegrino Matarazzo has named experienced former Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Gonzalo Castro as captain of his young side. He is a great leader and a very creative player that could be a great contributor to the set-pieces.
The injury list is the biggest problem right now, Maxime Awoudja has an Achilles injury, while Lilian Egloff has a muscle tear. Philipp Förster is out with a calf problem. Pacey winger Erik Thommy has fractured his elbow. Mateo Klimowicz is struggling with a muscle problem, Clinton Mola has a hip injury, but ex-Dinamo Zagreb Borna Sosa could return after a knee injury. Stuttgart have scored at least 2 goals in their last 9 matches against Freiburg in all competitions.
Stuttgart: Kobel - Anton, Kaminski, Kempf - Massimo, Endo, Mangala, Wamangituka - Didavi, Castro (c) - Kalajdzic
Out: Gonzalez (thigh), Thommy (elbow)
Doubtful: Förster (calf), Mavropanos (muscular)
Coach: Pellegrino Matarazzo
Freiburg finished eighth last season, missing out on the UEFA Europa League places by a single point. They positively began the 2020/21 campaign with a 2-1 DFB Cup success at third-division Waldhof Mannheim. Dutch attacking midfielder Guus Til, who signed on loan from Spartak Moscow earlier this month, missed that game and is a doubt with an ankle injury. With Alexander Schwolow leaving for Hertha Berlin and Mark Flekken injured during the warm-up of last week's cup game, Christian Streich’s side this week added Florian Müller on loan from Mainz. He should get his chance before Benjamin Uphoff, another recent arrival from Karlsruhe, to be the first choice in goal this weekend. Luca Waldschmidt's departure to Benfica is a great loss but Freiburg tried to fill the hole with the addition of Ermedin Demirovic from Alaves. Hamburg-born Bosnia-Herzegovina U21 striker scored 14 goals in 28 games on loan at St. Gallen in 2019/20. Club record goalscorer Nils Petersen should still start alongside Lucas Höler. Petersen was Freiburg's 11-goal top scorer last term. the Only Dortmund wing-back Achraf Hakimi (10) - now of Inter Milan - had more assists among Bundesliga defenders than Freiburg captain Christian Günter (8) last season. Janik Haberer is nearing a return after an ankle injury, while Keven Schlotterbeck is also working his way back to full fitness.
Freiburg: Müller - Schmid, Lienhart, Heintz, Günter (c) - Sallai, Keitel, Höfler, Grifo - Petersen, Höler
Out: Flekken (elbow), Haberer (ankle)
Doubtful: Schlotterbeck (muscular), Til (ankle)
Coach: Christian Streich

It is a tough match to predict after the injury crisis in Stuttgart and a lot of changes in the transfer market but both teams to score could be a reasonable bet for this game.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
