Sami Khedira could make his first start for Hertha Berlin as he returns to meet former club VfB Stuttgart on Saturday.
A triumphant homecoming is not something Stuttgart are looking to put on, though. The promoted side need to turn around their home form, having only won once all season at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, but that did come in their most recent game as they beat Mainz 2-0 with goals from Sasa Kalajdzic and the in-form Silas Wamangituka. The former then completed his brace from the bench, although in vain, in last week's 5-2 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen. Silas had scored in four successive games before the Leverkusen loss. He’s Stuttgart’s leading marksman on 11 goals.
The loss was made even worse by yet another injury to forward Nicolas Gonzalez, with this hamstring tear the Argentine’s third layoff of the season. It should be a straight swap between the two up top for this game, while left wing-back Borna Sosa is also set to be restored by American head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo, with Silas moving back over to the right.
Stuttgart: Kobel - Mavropanos, Anton, Kempf (c) - Silas, Mangala, Endo, Sosa - Förster, Klimowicz - Kalajdzic
Out: Churlinov (broken nose), Egloff (ankle), Gonzalez (hamstring), Mola (hip)
Doubtful: Al Ghaddioui (match fitness), Castro (hamstring), Didavi (muscular)
Coach: Pellegrino Matarazzo
Should Khedira feature, it will be his 100th Bundesliga appearance and come against the club where he made his first 98. The 2014 FIFA World Cup winner, who spent a total of 15 years at Stuttgart and lifted the Bundesliga Meisterchale in 2007, made his debut for Hertha as a sub in last week’s 1-0 defeat to leaders Bayern Munich. It was the Berlin club’s fourth straight loss, including two games under returning head coach Pal Dardai.
He has restored his former No.1 Rune Jarstein - who saved a penalty from Robert Lewandowski the last matchday - in goal ahead of Alexander Schwolow but is yet to get six-goal top scorer Matheus Cunha firing. The Brazilian has gone 10 league games without finding the back of the net. Krzysztof Piatek is set to lead the line again with Jhon Cordoba out, while another deadline day arrival, Nemanja Radonjic, could also be pushing for a start after a lively cameo against Bayern.
Hertha: Jarstein - Pekarik, Stark (c), Alderete, Mittelstädt - Tousart, Ascacibar - Lukebakio, Darida, Cunha - Piatek
Out: Boyata (foot), Cordoba (muscular), Dilrosun (knee), Plattenhardt (groin), Torunarigha (hip)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Pal Dardai

Stuttgart have won just one of nine home games in the league this season, drawing five and losing three. Hertha has recorded one win in their last 10 Bundesliga matches, and are winless in their last six on the road. It is the role of a dice, more than anything, with two teams unable to show any kind of consistency. Both teams to score could be only a reasonable bet here.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
