VfB Stuttgart and Mainz open Matchday 19 on Friday night.
Stuttgart begins the day in 10th, seven places and 12 points better off than relegation-threatened Mainz, but American coach Pellegrino Matarazzo will be keen to arrest an alarming run of form which has seen the Swabians earn just one of a possible nine points since beating Augsburg 4-1 on Matchday 15. Gonzalez and Silas Wamangituka - collectively responsible for 16 of Stuttgart's 33 goals this season - returned from suspension for last Saturday's trip to Freiburg, and although the latter got on the scoresheet, they were ultimately powerless to stop their side sliding to a 2-1 defeat.
Left wing-back Borna Sosa was a late injury absentee that day. The Croatian will be assessed this week, with Tanguy Coulibaly on hand to martial the flanks alongside Silas should he not make it. Arsenal-owned Konstantinos Mavropanos replaced Pascal Stenzel at half-time against Freiburg. Which one joins Waldemar Anton and Marc-Oliver Kempf in Stuttgart's back three appears to be a question Matarazzo remains undecided on.
Stuttgart: Kobel - Stenzel, Anton, Kempf - Silas, Mangala, Endo, Coulibaly - Klimowicz, Castro (c) - Gonzalez
Out: Al Ghaddioui (pelvis), Awoudja (Achilles tendon), Egloff (ankle), Mola (hip)
Doubtful: Förster (muscular), Sosa (muscular)
Coach: Pellegrino Matarazzo
Mainz's six assignments in 2021 have all been against top-six opposition. They took a 2-0 lead in a losing effort to Bayern Munich, held Borussia Dortmund, and beat Leipzig, whilst suffering 2-0 losses to Frankfurt and Wolfsburg. Mainz only has Schalke below them in the table and are at least two games away from pulling clear of the automatic relegation places, but they put in their best performance of the season last time out. Significant underdogs against title-chasing RB Leipzig, they twice came from behind - through center-back, Moussa Niakhate of all players - before Leandro Barreiro snatched a 3-2 win.
Danny da Costa and Dominik Kohr were thrown straight in for debuts following their loan acquisitions from Eintracht Frankfurt. The former assisted Barreiro's winning goal, but the latter may be forced to sit out on Friday after coming off late with a calf strain. Top scorer Jean-Philippe Mateta left for Crystal Palace in the winter window, so Karim Onisiwo should join Quaison in attack once more.
Mainz: Zentner - St. Juste, Bell, Niakhate - da Costa, Barreiro, Latza (c), Mwene - Stöger - Onisiwo, Quaison
Out: -
Doubtful: Brosinski (knee), Kohr (calf), Kunde (knee)
Coach: Bo Svensson

Stuttgart have claimed just five of their 22 points so far this season on home soil and are yet to win in eight matches. Both teams to score looks like a most reasonable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
