Schalke has strengthened their defense with the signings of Sead Kolasinac and Shkodran Mustafi from Arsenal but will that be enough to keep VfB Stuttgart at bay on Saturday? Read our reasons for Stuttgart vs Schalke prediction and betting tips.
Stuttgart appears glued to 10th place in the table, a spot they have occupied since the middle of January. While results have been mixed, the promoted side can likely plan for the second season of top-flight football for 2021/22. That being said, they’ve earned seven points from the last four games, thanks in part to Sasa Kalajdzic. The league’s tallest player has scored five of Stuttgart’s last six goals, including the winner at Cologne last Saturday - which was also his third-headed goal from a Borna Sosa cross over the last three league outings. Five of Kalajdzic’s strikes have been headers - a league-high.
The Austrian is being afforded an extended run in the starting XI by head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo - who last week signed a contract extension - in the injury-enforced absence of Nicolas Gonzalez. Captain Gonzalo Castro is back to full fitness following a hamstring injury. Philipp Förster should join him in the final third behind Kalajdzic with Erik Thommy having pulled his hip flexor in training.
Stuttgart: Kobel - Mavropanos, Anton, Kempf - Silas, Mangala, Endo, Sosa - Förster, Castro (c) - Kalajdzic
Out: Egloff (ankle), Gonzalez (hamstring), Mola (hip)
Doubtful: Coulibaly (knee), Thommy (hip)
Coach: Pellegrino Matarazzo
Kolasinac and Mustafi have slotted straight into the Schalke back four following their moves from Arsenal in the January transfer window, but points need to start reflecting performances and fast. The Royal Blues have conceded a league-high 56 goals and remain rooted to the foot of the table, nine points adrift of safety, and with just one league win in the last 13 months. Head coach Christian Gross also has to make yet another change in goal and turn to third-choice goalkeeper Michael Langer.
The 36-year-old has only played three games in the Bundesliga but No.1 Ralf Fährmann and his understudy Frederik Rönnow are both injured. At the other end, the scoring burden falls on the shoulders of American teenager Matthew Hoppe, with veteran Klaas-Jan Huntelaar still out with a calf injury. Schalke has conceded a league-high 15 headed goals and 56 overall.
Schalke: Langer - Becker, Mustafi, Thiaw, Kolasinac (c) - Mascarell - William, Serdar, Bentaleb, Harit - Hoppe
Out: Boujellab (ankle), Fährmann (rib), Huntelaar (calf), Ludewig (foot), Nastasic (calf), Paciencia (knee), Rönnow (groin), Sane (knee), Skrzybski (knee), Uth (thigh)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Christian Gross

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
