Key players are missing for both VfB Stuttgart and Werder Bremen on Sunday with Silas Wamangituka and Josh Sargent sidelined. Read our reasons for Stuttgart vs Werder prediction and betting tips.
Despite a 4-0 humbling by champions Bayern Munich last time out, Stuttgart is just four points off a European place with eight matchdays remaining. It would be a remarkable achievement if Pellegrino Matarazzo can lead VfB into the UEFA Europa League and, even without European football next season, Stuttgart will no doubt be looking back on a fine return to the top flight come to the end of the campaign. Of greater concern than the result in Munich will have been a knee injury to Silas, which cruelly ended their 13-goal breakout star's superb season.
Tanguy Coulibaly is most likely to replace Silas, while even greater onus will fall on the shoulders of 13-goal top scorer Sasa Kalajdzic, who took his Bundesliga form onto the international stage last week by scoring three goals, including two in Austria's 2-2 draw with Scotland. After scoring in seven straight games, Kalajdzic failed to find the net against Bayern last time out. The Austrian forward has scored in each of his last four matches at home, however. Nicolas Gonzalez had been on the road to recovery, but an injured thigh in midweek rules him out for the next two to three weeks. Stuttgart can celebrate their 750th Bundesliga in the club’s 1,825th game. Only Bayern, Borussia Dortmund, and Bremen have reached that total before.
Stuttgart: Kobel - Mavropanos, Anton, Kempf - Coulibaly, Endo, Castro (c), Sosa - Förster, Thommy - Kalajdzic
Out: Al Ghaddioui (ankle), Gonzalez (thigh), Mola (hip), Silas (knee)
Doubtful: Cisse (calf), Egloff (ankle), Mangala (thigh)
Coach: Pellegrino Matarazzo
After two successive defeats on home soil, Bremen will be relieved to be on their travels when the Bundesliga roars back into action this weekend. Currently 12th, Die Grün-Weißen are closer to their hosts than the relegation places and they will have their sights set on finishing the season in the top half. That bid will have to take place without top-scorer Sargent who was unfortunate enough to both scores an own goal and pick up a fifth yellow card of the season in the 2-1 defeat to Wolfsburg on Matchday 26.
For the first time in his Bundesliga career, USMNT striker Sargent is suspended. Niclas Füllkrug should lead the line in the young American's absence, while there may also be a change at the back, with Milos Veljkovic sent back from international duty due to an injury picked up against the Wolves. Either Christian Groß or Niklas Moisander should deputise. Bremen has not beaten Stuttgart in their last four meetings (1D, 3L) - the last win for Werder against Stuttgart came on 2 December 2017).
Werder: Pavlenka - Groß, Toprak, Friedl - Gebre Selassie (c), Eggestein, Möhwald, Augustinsson - Schmid, Rashica - Füllkrug
Out: Sargent (suspended)
Doubtful: Plogmann (knee), Veljkovic (groin)
Coach: Florian Kohfeldt

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
