Swansea host Barnsley at the Liberty Stadium (Swansea) in the second leg of the Championship Promotion Play-Off Semi-finals and the match kicks off at 6.30 pm (UK) on Saturday, May 22. Read our reasons for Swansea vs Barnsley prediction and betting tips.
Swansea boss Steve Cooper warned it was “only half-time” after his side took a slender 1-0 lead in their Championship play-off semi-final against Barnsley. Andre Ayew’s excellent curling finish six minutes before half-time proved decisive and was a rare moment of quality in a fast and furious first leg at Oakwell. Barnsley didn’t capitalise on the fact that the Oakwell opened its gates for the fans after more than a 14-month absence. The Reds threw the kitchen sink at Swansea in the second half but Swansea held on to a minimal lead. The winners of the two-legged tie will meet either Cherries or Brentford in the final at Wembley on Saturday, May 29.
Steve Cooper’s side take a 1-0 lead into the second leg against the Tykes thanks to Andre Ayew’s fine strike. Ayew had given the Swans the same advantage in the first leg of last season’s play-offs, which saw Brentford go on to win 3-2 on aggregate in their last game at Griffin Park. Experience gained from that situation will stand the Swans in good stead when they welcome Barnsley to the Liberty for the second leg and try to book their spot in the final at Wembley.
Apart from Andrew Ayew’s decider, Swansea were actually indebted to goalkeeper Freddie Woodman for their narrow advantage going into Saturday’s return leg – he kept his 23rd clean sheet of the season in all competitions. Hopefully, Cooper won’t rely on the same type of performance on Saturday. Away from home, it was a success, but more pace on the break will be required from the start. Either way, the first part is done, and the main reason for that is Freddie Woodman, a man of the match. Much deserved, and credit where it is due.
As for Barnsley, the result may not have gone as he wanted, but the passion Valerien Ismael felt from the stands in his first game in front of Oakwell fans as Barnsley manager showed why he was so keen to move to the Championship in the autumn. Ismael admitted the ferocity of the support took some getting used to in the first half of the 1-0 defeat, but he thinks his side will now be much better prepared for the second leg at Swansea on Saturday.
Moreover, he will take notice of the fact that The Reds have won all three of their away matches in the Football League play-offs, winning in the second leg of the semi-final on the previous two occasions. They are the only team to play more than once away from home and win every game in the history of the play-offs. Due to that and to their display after the interval in the first leg, Valerian Ismael and Barnsley fans can stay upbeat about their chances on Saturday.

Swansea meet Barnsley being the only side to complete a league double over Barnsley, winning 2-0 both home and away against the Tykes. Moreover, Swansea are unbeaten in their last 17 matches against Barnsley in all competitions (W9, D7), having added the latest triumph to that number.
The form guide before the playoffs started will certainly have a few still backing Barnsley to get past Swansea. Going into the second leg there is every chance The Reds can earn their place in the top-flight for only the second time, but they have to be considered outsiders here, due to resilient Swansea defence, perfectly able to hold them off.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
