Swansea host Birmingham City in the second round of the Championship on Saturday, September 19, at Liberty Stadium (Swansea) and the match kicks off at 3pm (UK).
After reaching play-offs quite unexpectedly last season, Swansea will go into the new campaign more ambitiously with one of the play-off spots being obviously the target for the upcoming season. They started the 2020/2012 season brightly after an way win against Preston North End (0-1), and will look to continue the winning streak when on their home debut against Birmingham City.
Birmingham also made a winning start to their season after a 1-0 victory against last year's play-off finalists, Brentford. They started the last season with a win against the Bees as well, but after a promising start to the campaign failed to keep the momentum going and ended barely above the relegation zone. This time around they will hope for more consistency and to built on the initial good form.
SWANSEA VS BIRMINGHAM MATCH ANALYSIS
For the Swans, manager Steve Cooper has done brilliantly in his first managerial job despite limited resources and a small squad. Probably most important is the new loan agreement for Rhian Brewster, their best player last year with 10 goals in 20 apperances. Mike van der Hoorn has moved on , but they signed a new goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, a winger Jamal Lowe and midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White on loan.
And it was Morgan Gibbs-White who scored the winner on his debut last weekend in their season opener against Preston. It wasn't a particularly exciting game and it was settled by the swansea's only shot on target that afternoon. Their 20/21 season had already started with a 2-0 defeat in the first round of the EFL Cup against League Two side Newport Count, but as far as their league openers go, they haven't lost in last seven matches.
As for the Blues, manager Aitor Karanka got his first Championship win against the play-off losers and could take enough positives from the game where his team were impressive in the first half and solid enough defensively to secure the win in the second. More importantly, they ended the barren run of 17 games without a win in all competitions.
However, after a home defeat to Cambridge in the first round of the Carabao Cup last weekend, Karanka will be delighted to see his new team begin their campaign with a win and a clean sheet. The manager made a brave decision to start a nineteen-year-old Zach Jeacock in goal, with newly recruited Neil Etheridge left on the bench. Three more players earned their Championship debuts, but the squad seemed well tuned and organized in a 4-2-3-1 formation, which will probably be the way to go against The Swans too.

Swansea have a slightly better head-to-head record with 3 wins to Birmingham's 1 and 2 draws in the last 6 matches (over the last decade) and the home advantage seems crucial in those games, with visitors winning 16% of the games. However, both sides have a negative record from last year's 37 and 39 games respectively and on average they score 1.8 and 1.2 goals in their H2H matches. The Swans should be considered favorites, but their lack of consistency from last season could be a potential stumbling block for them.
