Sweden vs Georgia - Match Preview

Sweden hosts Georgia to the Friends Arena in Solna on Thursday as the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers begin. Read our reasons for Sweden vs Georgia prediction and betting tips.

Sweden VS Georgia - Betting Preview

Sweden hasn't had a good season with relegation in the Nations League. They were relegated from Tier A of the competition after losing five times in six games in a tough group with France, Portugal, and Croatia alongside them. They hope to do better in the World Cup and begin their campaign with a home match against Georgia. The other teams in Group B are Spain, Kosovo, and Greece. It may be the play-off route that takes Sweden to Qatar, finishing above Spain doesn't look at all likely. Sweden finished bottom of their Nations League group earlier this season. Only three points were earned by Sweden who lost out on head-to-head results against Croatia and went down.

The nordic outfit will be hoping to gain some form before the upcoming European championship. Sweden reached the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup after failing to qualify in 2010 and 2014.  They are through to the finals of Euro 2020. Six of their last eight internationals have been lost, they did win in Russia and at home to Croatia though. Only France and Portugal have beaten them in their last 11 home fixtures. They will hope to recapture the form that has seen them win their last five home World Cup qualifiers. Form in European Championship qualifiers is good too with no loss since 2015. Ibrahimovic has come out of international retirement, so that should strengthen the Swedes. The all-time Swedish top scorer retired from international duty after Euro 2016, but a good run in recent months prompted a shock return from exile. All of this indicates that going to Sweden for a qualifier isn't an easy task at all.
Due to previous performances and commitment, Isak and Marcus Berg could get the nod for Sweden, resulting in Ibrahimovic taking a spot among the replacements. Filip Helander and Albin Ekdal may earn recalls in defense and midfield respectively, while Dejan Kulusevski could switch to a role on the flank. Jesper Karlsson is expected to remain on the substitutes' bench despite his excellent form for AZ Alkmaar.

Sweden: Olsen; Lustig, Lindelof, Helander, Bengtsson; Kulusevski, Ekdal, Olsson, Forsberg; Isak, Berg

Ex France international and Bayern player Willy Sagnol has named a fairly young squad for this month's triple-header, with 93-cap veteran Jaba Kankava leading the line once again. Valeri Qazaishvili, Murtaz Daushvili, and Valerian Gvilia, who have a combined 120 caps between them, haven't been called up this time. Georgia is the obvious underdogs here but was decent during the Euro qualifiers through the UEFA Nations League, losing only in the finals of the playoffs to North Macedonia. This will be the first-ever competitive game between Sweden and Georgia. The two sides have not even played a friendly game with each other before. Georgia comes into this match with no wins in their last five internationals.

Three of those games have been drawn with stalemates against North Macedonia, Estonia, and Armenia. They finished third in their League C Nations League group with four out of six being drawn. That's their best chance of any success as they have never qualified for either the World Cup or European Championship finals. Only two of their last ten away internationals have been won. Those victories came against Gibraltar and Estonia. You have to go back to 2005 for their last away World Cup qualifiers win. Since the win over Kazakhstan, Georgia has gone 16 away games without a victory, though three of the last four have been drawn.  Georgia will be forced into several changes with attacking trio Zuriko Davitashvili, Valeri Qazaishvili, and Nika Kacharava all missing out on a place in the squad. Levan Shengelia, Tornike Okriashvili, and Giorgi Kvilitaia are in line to earn opportunities in the starting lineup.

Georgia: Loria; Kakabadze, Khocholava, Kashia, Tabidze; Kvekveskiri, Kankava; Shengelia, Okriashvili, Lobzhanidze; Kvilitaia

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
