Sweden meet Poland at the Gazprom Arena (Saint Petersburg) in the EURO 2020 Group E Round 3 match and the game kicks off at 5 pm (UK) on Wednesday, June 23. Read our reason for Sweden vs Poland prediction and betting tips.
EVERYTHING STILL OPEN IN GROUP E
Sweden have surprisingly raced to the top of the table, that included two heavyweights of world football. One more good performance, and they could ensure progression into the knockouts. However, the desperate Poland would have something to say about that. As of now, the Poles are dead last in the table, with a single point against their name. Nothing but a win will be their objective this Wednesday. Should they win, they would be placed higher than the Swedes due to a better head to head record. At the same time, one of Spain or Slovakia will surely drop points this game week, as those two are pitted against each other.
SWEDEN BUOYED BY SUPERB RECORD AGAINST POLAND OVER THE YEARS
Already assured of at least a top-three finish after a 1-0 win against Slovakia in possibly the dullest match of the tournament so far, Sweden have an opportunity to go undefeated in the group stage of a European Championships for the first time since 2004 - also the last time they topped their group. Coincidentally, their last meeting with opponents Poland was their final leadup game to Euro 2004, and was one of three head to head victories by a 2+ goal margin across a 12-month period.
Having entered the tournament with five consecutive victories, including four wins ‘to nil’, Sweden have continued that form by adding another two tournament clean sheets, and now haven’t conceded more than one goal in any of their last six Euro fixtures. They could make do with a draw here, and move into the knockouts. However, they would be wise to not be overconfident. Robert Lewandowski and co will be desperate, and they need to take advantage of that.
TIP #1: After his match winner against Slovakia, Emil Forsberg has opened the scoring in two of Sweden’s last three games and for him to score anytime here stands out among Sweden vs Poland betting odds.
LEWANDOWSKI AND CO. TO GO ALL OUT FROM THE START
Lewandowski and co had come into this competition with great hopes, but as of now they find themselves at the bottom of the table – and on course to being eliminated before the knockouts. Moreover, failure to win here would see Poland exit the group stage of a European Championship without a victory for the third time in four attempts.
Poland knew that a defeat would mean they could not progress from Group E and they fell behind towards the end of the first half when Alvaro Morata's close-range finish. But Lewandowski, who had struggled to make an impact in Poland's opening-game defeat to Slovakia, equalised early in the second half when he thumped home a header. Saturday’s impressive draw with Spain might act as a timely confidence boost.
TIP #2: Robert Lewandowski has now recorded his team’s first or last goal in five of his previous seven appearances for club or country. He’ll have to bring his A-game here, and we back him to score again at any time.
