Tottenham host Aston Villa at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (London) in the 37th round of the Premier League and the match kicks off at 6 pm (UK) on Wednesday, May 19. Read our reasons for Tottenham vs Aston Villa prediction and betting tips.
Tottenham’s Champions League hopes hang on a thread as they need the three points against Villa, and results going their way elsewhere. Winning looks likely considering their last match saw Spurs record more shots and shots on target than any Premier League outing under former manager Jose Mourinho, as interim boss Ryan Mason secured three wins from his opening three home league matches. On the other hand, a three-game winless run (D1, L2) has ended Aston Villa’s European hopes, although Villa are still set to finish in their highest PL placing since securing 9th in 2010/11. Villa have picked up more points away than at home and have scored first for four straight road trips, which means they could be difficult opponents.
Spurs, with Ryan Mason in caretaker charge, beat Wolves 2-0 on Sunday to maintain their hopes of European football next season and it is clear there has been a change of mentality since Mourinho lost his job as manager. While it wasn’t Tottenham’s most convincing performance, the home side still breezed through the 90 minutes relatively untroubled and it never felt like the result was in doubt. The Spurs are enjoying their football once again, something that was clearly missing from Jose’s tenure.
Unafraid to make a mistake or face the reprisal of repudiating the Special One’s rigid instructions, players were contrastingly relaxed on the ball, appearing to actually enjoy plying their trade. Tottenham certainly haven’t had it all their own way since Jose left the club - far from it. Mason’s Spurs have won three and lost two since he took charge of the club on an interim basis. However, there’s a palpable new, refreshingly positive aura about the side, spreading throughout the squad.
As for Aston Villa, Sunday’s 3-2 defeat at Crystal Palace means Dean Smith’s team will likely need to beat both Tottenham and Chelsea in their remaining two matches and hope Leeds falter to stand any chance of moving up from 11th place in the table. In the grand scheme of things, apart from around £3million in prize money, it might not appear to matter all that much. But after a season that once promised to deliver something special, finishing in the lower half of the table will still feel somewhat disappointing for Smith and his players.
Then again, for much of the second half of the campaign Villa have looked like a bottom-10 team. This was, after all, their 10th defeat since the turn of the year and they have now won just three of their last 15 matches. While the injury woes of Jack Grealish, who made his second substitute appearance since returning from a three-month absence at Selhurst Park, cannot be ignored it has been far from the only factor in their downturn. One thing though Smith’s players cannot be accused of is a lack of effort so we expect them to produce a much more focused display on Wednesday.

Tottenham meet Aston Villa looking to complete their seventh Premier League double over Aston Villa, something they’ve only done as many times in the competition against Everton (7) and Man City (8). Furthermore, Aston Villa have lost 12 of their last 13 meetings with Tottenham in all competitions, winning the other in April 2015 under Tim Sherwood.
With more to play for in the penultimate round of league games for the season, the Spurs should come away with all three points, but we also expect Villa to test Tottenham’s resolve as they aim to end a three-game winless run and end the campaign on a positive note.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
