Tottenham host Brentford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (London) in the League Cup semi-final and the match kicks off at 7.45 pm (UK) on Tuesday, January 5.
TOTTENHAM VS BRENTFORD MATCH ANALYSIS
The match, Brentford's first visit to the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, will pitch the team currently third in the Premier League against The Bees, fourth in the Sky Bet Championship.
Tottenham reached this stage with a win over Stoke City. They entered the competition at the Third Round and had a bye over Leyton Orient at that stage due to the League Two side being unable to field a team due to a Covid-19 outbreak. They beat Chelsea on penalties in the Fourth Round next to progress to their 16th League Cup semi-final, progressing from eight of their previous 15 attempts, most recently in 2014/15.
Tottenham started the year with a bang as they hosted Leeds at home. Spurs had an extra few days of rest after their scheduled clash against Fulham on Wednesday was postponed because of an outbreak of Covid-19 within the opposition camp, and made the most of the break with a 3-0 win against Marcelo Bielsa's side. Jose Mourinho got his side back on track and now faces a dilemma ahead of a Carabao Cup semi-final against Brentford on Tuesday evening with a couple of injury issues to contend with, meaning it is a far from an ideal situation as the busy festive period continues.
As for Brentford, this will be the fifth Premier League side The Bees have faced in their Carabao Cup run. After a First Round win over Wycombe Wanderers, Brentford knocked out Southampton, West Bromwich Albion, Fulham, and Newcastle to reach the last four. It is the first time Brentford have reached this stage of any major cup competition.
After Brentford created a new chapter in the club's 131-year history, they were back in the Championship action. After a win against Bournemouth, they are shaping up once more as serious promotion candidates. The Bees have not lost since October, with their unbeaten run currently standing at 15 (W8, D7) games in the league – the longest of any team in England's top four divisions. Just as Tottenham, they too had a forced break as their Saturday’s clash with Bristol has been called off over fears of a possible Covid-19 outbreak among Robins players.

This will be the fourth time the sides have been drawn against each other in this competition in the last 30 years. Tottenham won two-legged Second Round ties in 1992, 1998, and 2000. The Bees last faced the North London side in league competition in the 1949/50 season and in 12 games between the teams have won one and drawn three.
Tottenham are obvious favourites to progress to the Football League (EFL) Cup final and put themselves in contention for the club’s first silverware since 2008, but they will be wary of the fact that three of their last four EFL Cup ties have gone to a penalty shootout (W1, L2).
Brentford’s eyes are currently focused on a far greater prize than the EFL Cup, with the ‘Bees’ entering the New Year pushing for the automatic promotion berth. That said, they will fight until the bitter end to become the first lower-league side in 30 years to win this competition.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
