Tottenham Hotspur and Everton's 2020/2021 seasons get underway at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (London) on Sunday, 13 September and the game kicks off at 4.30pm (UK).
The decision to sack Mauricio Pochettino after he led the team to a Champions League final was one of the talking points of the previous campaign. It was a sign of how ruthless the football world has become. At the time he and the club parted ways, they were 14th in the table and with the new stadium they couldn't afford a season without European football. Jose Mourinho was a safe bet and he helped them finish sixth and get back on track.
Unlike Tottenham, The Toffees have spent big in recent transfer windows under different managers, but have largely failed to achieve the stated goals. They have splashed £450m on players alone since Farhad Moshiri bought the club and ended up with a bloated and expensive squad that Carlo Ancelotti inherited from former managers Ronald Koeman and Marco Silva. Seems like getting the club to Europe may be one of the biggest tests of Ancelotti's decorated career.
TOTTENHAM VS EVERTON MATCH ANALYSIS
At the beginning of the season plenty of matches lay in store for the Spurs over the next few weeks. Premier League, Europa League, and the Carabao Cup will provide minutes for everybody and the key will be to keep players fresh and to set them up to win as well. Having said that, after pre-season warm-up friendlies, it's hard to imagine that Jose Mourinho will put out anything but the best team against Everton on Sunday.
Speaking of the squad, there haven't been too many departures and arrivals at Tottenham, with Giovanni Lo Celso signing a permanent agreement, addition of Matt Doherty, a defender from Wolves, and another midfielder Pierre-EmileHojbjerg from Southampton.Mourinho isn't expected to stick around too long, as his style is not to develop young players and make projects. He is deeply pragmatic and will likely carry on with aggressive and direct, but certainly not exciting tactics.
For Ancelotti at Everton, the most pressing matter was to address the problems in midfield, where some of the better players are out with long-term injuries (Gomes and Gbamin), while others are just ineffective. That's why they have brought in Allan from Napoli to provide more protection in front of the back four, and Watford's Abdoulaye Doucoure fe and James Rodriguez from real Madrid for more attacking intent.
The Toffees created next to nothing from the midfield last season, and maybe this is anticipating Ancelotti's shift to a 4-2-3-1 formation rather than the current 4-4-2 which didn't provide too many chances for Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin up front. Ancelotti needs to instill new belief and identity at Goodison Park, but they must be patient this time as it might take another year or two for Everton to undo the damage of the last couple of years.

The Spurs were unbeaten in the last six games of the 19/20 season, and one of those included a win against Everton at home as they are now unbeaten in their last six matches in London. Everton, on the other hand, have been victorious in only one of their last six games. The new signings are supposed to boost their morale and confidence ahead of the new campaign. However,Tottenham have a more tuned squad and at their ground especially, that may be their advantage on Sunday.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
