TOTTENHAM VS MAN CITY: STATS & FACTS
It’s an unforgiving first game in charge for new Spurs manager Nuno Espírito Santo as he welcomes the 2020/21 champions though he can take comfort in that his new side are undefeated in each of their three previous top-flight opening day fixtures against City (W1, D2). However there’s been 20 different PL managers who have faced reigning champions in their first game, and only one was victorious, highlighting the magnitude of the task ahead for the Portuguese coach. Meanwhile, after acquiring talents such as Jack Grealish and with a legitimate interest in Spurs’ Harry Kane, City look set to be even stronger this season than they were last. Even so, this fixture is rarely a walk in the park for them, as they’ve lost their last three competitive away games here, failing to score on each occasion. Another defeat would hand Guardiola his first-ever sequence of four consecutive competitive away losses to one opponent.
TOTTENHAM VS MAN CITY: PRE-MATCH TALK
Of course, the game has been overshadowed by weeks over the future of Spurs and England talisman Harry Kane and the will he, won't he go to City question. However, it looks like that particular distraction won't completely become a circus because he's a major doubt due to injury. Spurs still have Heung-Min Son in a forward position and will be buoyed by a recent friendly victory over north London rivals Arsenal. The Portuguese boss has navigated an unbeaten pre-season with Tottenham, while his Wolves side also did the double over Man City back in 2019/20.
As for the defending champions Man City, they will be looking to successfully defend their league title for a second time under Guardiola and are the league title favourites again according to the bookies. Sergio Aguero has moved on to Barcelona but the £100m capture of Jack Grealish from Aston Villa was a statement of intent. City’s season kicked off with a Community Shield loss to Leicester when a weakened City team was narrowly beaten 1-0 by the Foxes, but Guardiola does not expect to have anything like a full-strength side again here.
TOTTENHAM VS MAN CITY: TEAM NEWS
None of Tottenham's new signings are expected to start against City on Sunday. Cristian Romero, the club’s second most expensive player, is recovering from a knee issue, so Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier should start at the heart of the defence, while Bryan Gil recently finished up with Spain at the Olympics and is unlikely to play any part. Nuno Espirito Santo has confirmed that Harry Kane may be available for Tottenham this weekend, but it’s highly unlikely as he only started training with the group on Friday.
On the other hand, City will have a number of key players missing after their involvement in Euro 2020 and Copa America, with Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne just two of those expected to be out of the fixture. Brazilian duo Gabriel Jesus and Ederson were part of Brazil's Copa America squad that went all the way to the final, while John Stones, Kyle Walker and Raheem Sterling all played key roles in England's progression to the Euro 2020 final. New signing Jack Grealish should be ready to start though, while the likes of Riyad Mahrez and Ferran Torres will provide genuine potency in front of goal.
