Cagliari made a miracle at the weekend against Parma and now they must win some points again vs mid-table Udinese on Wednesday. Read our reasons for Udinese vs Cagliari prediction and betting tips.
Udinese coach Luca Gotti admitted Rodrigo De Paul should probably move on to a higher level, but still ‘made unusual mistakes’ against Crotone, such as the red card. The Argentina international scored both goals in this 2-1 away victory but was also sent off for a very high foot on Salvatore Molina. “The De Paul red and a naïve penalty were negative moments, along with Simy hitting the post in the final minute. For a team like mine, who tried to take the initiative and control the game, those are errors we should not be making,” the coach told the media. “I’ve already said it before that I saw De Paul’s growth both on and off the field. I feel he has developed a strong mentality, so aside from his football skills that are clear for all to see, I can tell you he’s a leader. He raises his voice when he has to, he is present in training, in the locker room, both attacking and defending. That is his great strength. I cannot know what the transfer market holds. He has been in Udine for five years, his level is growing higher and higher, so I expect him to sit down with the club at the end of the season to discuss what happens next. I would love to take some of the credit for his improvement, but I can’t, it was entirely his work. I can say we got along from the start, we see things the same way and that makes it easier when dealing with mistakes and what to improve. Rodrigo was marvelous on the goals, but he also made mistakes that he doesn’t usually make, and I don’t just mean the red card.”
Gotti surprisingly started Stefano Okaka and Ilija Nestovoski upfront at the Stadio Scida. “I look at fitness levels, who are in better shape during the week and can give the biggest contribution. Stefano Okaka has been out for a long time and we need patience with him to find out the right time for him to play, how many minutes he should have, and not to run too many risks of another relapse. Since I’ve been here, Okaka has always given 100 percent.”
Udinese prepares for Cagliari's visit with most of their squad available - the chief exception being suspended skipper Rodrigo De Paul - though long-term injury victims Ignacio Pussetto, Gerard Deulofeu, and Mato Jajalo are ruled out until next season. German midfielder Tolgay Arslan is leading the running to replace De Paul in the hosts' midfield three, while coach Luca Gotti surprisingly started Stefano Okaka and Ilija Nestorovski upfront at Crotone - citing management of fitness levels - and could instead play Fernando Llorente alongside either the latter or Fernando Forestieri.
Udinese: Musso; Bonifazi, Nuytinck, Samir; Molina, Arslan, Walace, Pereyra, Larsen; Nestorovski, Llorente
Cagliari coach Leonardo Semplici wants to see the same determination that allowed them to beat Parma 4-3 carried on for the rest of the season. They were 3-2 down at the 90th minute, scoring in stoppages with Gaston Pereiro and Alberto Cerri to turn it around, sparking a fireworks display outside the Sardegna Arena. “Fireworks are premature. We gave it our all, we gambled everything and we deserved it for the number of chances we created,” Semplici told the media. “I am happy for these players because they wanted the win, they kept fighting until they achieved it.”
Cagliari has certainly stepped up a gear since Semplici replaced Eusebio Di Francesco, but they remain in the bottom three. “When I arrived, I didn’t know this side very well, but they were all very eager to turn things around. We haven’t resolved all our problems, as was entirely evident today, but we have to make this determination into our greatest strength. Despite being 3-2 down, we were determined not to lose the game and we made it happen. It was important above all not to lose today, and possibly to win it, so the lads gave absolutely everything tonight. There was nothing held back. This victory must give us more confidence, more self-belief and make sure we keep our heads up always. People gave us up for dead, but we’re not dead, and we’ve got to keep fighting like this against every opponent.”
In addition to injury victims Marko Rog and Riccardo Sottil, first-choice Cagliari goalkeeper Alessio Cragno may also be absent on Wednesday, as one of several Italian players testing positive for COVID-19 while on international duty. Unless the much-admired stopper returns a negative test before kickoff, Udine-born Guglielmo Vicario will continue to deputize between the posts upon his return to the city. After his goal on Saturday evening, Leonardo Pavoletti is favorite ahead of Giovanni Simeone to partner top-scoring skipper Joao Pedro for the visitors - with matchwinner Alberto Cerri again expected to make an impact from the bench.
Cagliari: Vicario; Klavan, Godin, Rugani; Nandez, Marin, Nainggolan, Duncan, Lykogiannis; Pavoletti, Joao Pedro

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
