Borussia Dortmund will look to do what champions Bayern Munich couldn't by beating Union Berlin in the capital on Friday.
Union's impressive second campaign in the top flight got even better in their last home game when they held Bayern to a 1-1 draw on Matchday 11. Urs Fischer's team had chances to win that encounter, and they could have taken all three points in midweek as well - only for VfB Stuttgart to stage a second-half comeback in a 2-2 draw. Those results mean that high-flying Union has still lost only two league games this season, although the sixth-placed home team is now without a win in four. Talismanic attacker Max Kruse is still out injured but the visit of Dortmund will bring back good memories since Union ran out 3-1 winner in the corresponding fixture last term. The unheralded Marius Bülter scored twice on a memorable east Berlin night in August 2019, and Union's chances of repeating that feat could be boosted by the return of Christian Gentner on Friday. Fischer said that veteran midfielder Gentner is a "possibility" for the Dortmund game, while Danish striker Marcus Ingvartsen is close to a return too. Combative midfielder Robert Andrich serves the last part of a three-game ban, while defender Nico Schlotterbeck is out along with Kruse until the new year.
Union: Luthe - Trimmel (c), Friedrich, Knoche, Lenz - Griesbeck, Prömel - Becker, Teuchert, Bülter - Awoniyi
Out: Andrich (suspended), Kruse (thigh), Pohjanpalo (ankle), Schlotterbeck (thigh), Ujah (knee)
Doubtful: Gentner (calf), Hübner (groin), Ingvartsen (ribs)
Coach: Urs Fischer
Dortmund began life after Lucien Favre with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Werder Bremen on Tuesday. Edin Terzic was promoted to succeed Favre on an interim basis, and in his first game in charge, he trusted both 18-year-old Gio Reyna and 16-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko from the off. The latter is the youngest player in Bundesliga history and earned praise after his first league start, but he's unlikely to be asked to put his body on the line for the second time in four days against a notably robust Union outfit. Star striker Erling Haaland, who has 10 league goals in 2020/21, will not be back from injury until after the winter break. Centre-back Mats Hummels is a doubt after being forced off late in the Bremen game, although Terzic suggested afterward that it was "nothing dramatic." Not long back from injury himself, French defender Dan-Axel Zagadou could again fill in for the 2014 FIFA World Cup winner if required.
Dortmund: Bürki - Morey, Akanji, Hummels, Guerreiro - Can, Witsel - Sancho, Brandt, Reyna - Reus (c)
Out: Delaney (back), Haaland (muscular), Hazard (muscular), Meunier (calf), Schmelzer (knee)
Doubtful: Hummels (hamstring)
Coach: Edin Terzic

Union beat Dortmund 3-1 in last season’s corresponding fixture. It was the club’s maiden Bundesliga win. It could be a different final outcome this time, but for both teams to score is almost a sure betting option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
