Krzysztof Piatek will be looking to score in the Berlin city derby for the third time this season when Hertha makes the short trip across the capital to face Union on Sunday. Read our reasons for Union Berlin vs Hertha prediction and betting tips.
Union's five-game unbeaten run (W2, D3) may have come to an abrupt end at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt before the international break, but Urs Fischer's team is still well placed in the European race. They sit seventh going into Matchday 27, just two points back from sixth-placed Bayer Leverkusen as they go in search of continental football for the first time since 2001/02 and only the second time in the club's history. Top-scorer Max Kruse hit both goals in the 5-2 loss in Frankfurt and could hold the key if Union is to finish in the top-six. He underwent dental surgery this week but should be fit to play.
Kruse has had a hand in 15 goals for Union this season, coming in at a rate of one every 71 minutes. Julian Ryerson has made the left wing-back spot his own in recent weeks, but his place is under pressure from the returning Christopher Lenz. Joel Pohjanpalo has started five of Union's last six Bundesliga games without scoring. He has scored all nine of his Bundesliga goals as a substitute. In all three previous Bundesliga meetings between these two sides, the home side has won.
Union: Luthe - Friedrich, Knoche, Schlotterbeck - Trimmel (c), Prömel, Andrich, Lenz - Kruse, Ingvartsen - Musa
Out: Awoniyi (thigh), Becker (ankle), Gießelmann (shoulder), Ujah (knee)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Urs Fischer
Hertha is longing for a European battle but must perform and produce to escape a relegation dogfight instead. After a turbulent season, Pal Dardai has led his side to two wins from their last three which have edged them away from the trapdoor, but the Old Lady are still precariously placed. This will be Dardai's first meeting with Union. He will be the third Hertha coach to take charge in this game, while Urs Fischer has coached each of the last three for Union. They remain just a point ahead of the relegation play-off place and two clear of the automatic drop, with fixtures on the horizon against all four teams below them.
Vladimir Darida misses out through suspension, so Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Tousart are expected to continue in midfield with Sami Khedira edging closer to full fitness. Hertha's Khedira will turn 34 on the day of the game. Jhon Cordoba and Matheus Cunha were both on target in the 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen on Matchday 27 and should form the front three alongside Dodi Lukebakio, with Piatek - who scored twice in three minutes to win the reverse fixture again Union - among the substitutes.
Hertha: Jarstein - Klünter, Stark (c), M. Dardai - Zeefuik, Guendouzi, Tousart, Mittelstädt - Lukebakio, Cordoba, Cunha
Out: Boyata (match fitness), Darida (suspended), Netz (foot)
Doubtful: Löwen (knock)
Coach: Pal Dardai

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
