Union Berlin is looking to continue their great season when they host Bayer Leverkusen to start the weekend on Friday night.
Max Kruse looked to be the trailblazer for Union's sensational start to the season singlehandedly with six goals and five assists in his first nine appearances of the season before he suffered a torn thigh. After his injury Union has continued on the same path and is unbeaten in their five matches without Kruse (2W, 3D) with Taiwo Awoniyi taking over as inspirational leader for the most pleasant surprise in the Bundesliga in the new season. The Nigerian forward could not extend his scoring run to four straight matches last time out against Wolfsburg, but his teammates helped to earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw to that hold them onto their current fifth-place spot in the Bundesliga table.
Robert Andrich and Sheraldo Becker scored those goals, and both should keep their places - as many everyone from that Saturday afternoon fixture - as Urs Fischer is unlikely to change without having the luxury of welcoming back any missing key squad members. Marius Bülter could push Marcus Ingvarsten for the third forward spot alongside Becker and Awoniyi should Fischer fancy a change of personnel in the attack.
Union: Luthe - Friedrich, Knoche, Hübner - Trimmel (c), Andrich, Prömel, Lenz - Becker, Awoniyi, Ingvartsen
Out: Kruse (thigh), Pohjanpalo (ankle), Ujah (knee)
Doubtful: Gentner (muscular), Schlotterbeck (thigh)
Coach: Urs Fischer
While Union is flying up the table, Leverkusen is beginning to stumble at the top. Peter Bosz's side has gone three games without a win in the Bundesliga for the first time since the end of September 2020, suffering defeats to Bayern and Frankfurt before earning their first point of 2021 against Werder Bremen last weekend thanks to Patrik Schick's late equalizer. That goal from Schick should see Bosz keep him ahead of Lucas Alario in the striker's pecking order, even with Alario pushing a rare league start after his goal in the midweek cup action.
That game provided a boost in confidence for everyone at Leverkusen, with a 4-1 thrashing of Frankfurt in the DFB Cup, including the first brace for Moussa Diaby during his time at the club. Lars Bender returned and played 89 minutes in the game, which stands him in good stead to start this weekend. Meanwhile, Florian Wirtz has been rested for his side's past two competitive fixtures but may not be brought back in quickly with muscular pains for the 17-year-old. Should he remain out, Kerem Demirbay will continue in midfield.
Leverkusen: Hradecky - L. Bender (c), Tah, Tapsoba, Sinkgraven - Amiri, Baumgartlinger, Demirbay - Bailey, Schick, Diaby
Out: Arias (ankle), Bellarabi (hand), S. Bender (knee), Palacios (back), Paulinho (knee), Weiser (thigh)
Doubtful: Wirtz (muscular)
Coach: Peter Bosz

Union has required an average of six shots per goal this season; Leverkusen has taken seven, with only Bayern Munich requiring fewer (five) so far this season, and with those stats both teams to score looks like a sure bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
