Borussia Mönchengladbach seeks to continue their impressive recent form away to Union Berlin on Saturday.
Union has been the surprise package of the season and was as high as fifth just a couple of weeks ago, before suffering back-to-back defeats for the first time in 2020/21 with away losses to RB Leipzig and Augsburg. Urs Fischer's men have dropped down to eighth as a result, but are still just two points off the top six, and only three behind Gladbach. A return to home soil could prove welcome; Union has only lost once at the Alte Försterei this term, winning four and drawing four. Centre-back Florian Hübner sits out the final match of his suspension, so fit-again Kevin Schlotterbeck is set to keep his place in the side, while Julian Ryerson is the leading candidate to replace captain Christopher Trimmel, who misses this fixture after accumulating five yellow cards.
Only Bayern (53), Dortmund, Gladbach, and Eintracht Frankfurt (all 35) have scored more than Union's 33 goals in the Bundesliga so far this season. Max Kruse has accounted for six of them, followed by Taiwo Awoniyi on five. The Berliners are playing only their second season of Bundesliga football; five-time champions Gladbach their 53rd. The two sides have won one of their three top-flight meetings apiece, drawing the other, back on Matchday 2.
Union: Luthe - Friedrich (c), Knoche, Schlotterbeck - Ryerson, Andrich, Prömel, Lenz - Becker, Awoniyi, Ingvartsen
Out: Hübner (suspended), Kruse (thigh), Trimmel (suspended)
Doubtful: Ujah (knee)
Coach: Urs Fischer
Gladbach forward Thuram returned from a ban of his own last Saturday, coming off the bench to score in a notable 4-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund. It was his first outing since mid-December, but he is now pushing for a place in the starting line-up alongside fellow attackers Alassane Plea and captain Lars Stindl as Marco Rose's men bid to continue a run of form that has seen them earn 13 points of 15 available in 2021, including a victory over Bayern Munich to go with their Dortmund scalp. There are no fresh injuries to concern Rose, while American teenager Joe Scally, who joined the club earlier this month, could be included in the squad after taking part in full team training for the first time on Tuesday.
Borussia’s nine-goal top scorer Stindl has been directly involved in a goal in five of his last seven appearances, and nine of 18 this season. Thuram is on three goals and as many assists in 14 Bundesliga outings this season. He had five of each at the same stage last term, finishing the campaign with 10 and eight respectively.
Gladbach: Sommer - Lainer, Ginter, Elvedi, Bensebaini - Kramer, Neuhaus - Hofmann, Stindl (c), Thuram - Plea
Out: Lazaro (groin)
Doubtful: Reitz (pelvis)
Coach: Marco Rose

Gladbach has scored at least once in every league game so far this season but kept just three clean sheets. Both teams to score is a very reasonable betting option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
