Union Berlin will host managerless Mainz in the opening match of the third round of the new Bundesliga season.
Union Berlin has secured the services of goalkeeper Loris Karius on a one-year loan deal from English Premier League champions Liverpool. It will be a return to the Bundesliga for the 27-year-old German, who spent almost three seasons as Mainz's first-choice keeper between 2013 and 2016. Karius is one of 12 new arrivals at Union this summer, along with the likes of Marius Bülter, Keita Endo, Max Kruse, and Andreas Luthe – with whom he will be competing for the No.1 spot. He is also the second to join on loan from Liverpool, after Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi.
Urs Fischer's side is entering their second full Bundesliga season, having managed an impressive 11th-placed finish in their debut campaign in 2019/20. So far they have lost 3-1 at home to Augsburg and drawn 1-1 at Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Karius's debut could potentially come against his former club Mainz in the Matchday 3 on Friday.
Borussia Mönchengladbach had to settle for a draw against Union Berlin after Nico Schlotterbeck's late equalizer. After a quiet start, Plea almost put the Foals ahead following a superb mazy dribble, ghosting past two defenders but failing to get the better of Union keeper Andreas Luthe. The visitors grew into the game and had their best opportunity on the half-hour, with Dutch winger Sheraldo Becker – who had already gone close – rattling the crossbar after a slick team move but the contest remained at 0-0 heading into the break.
The Foals came flying out of the traps in the second half, and shortly after center-back Matthias Ginter tried his luck from the edge of the area, Thuram put them in front. The hosts looked to be comfortably closing on three points when Schlotterbeck connected with a Marcus Ingvartsen corner with a brilliant header over Lars Stindl and into the back of the net. Both sides pushed for a winner in the closing stages, with Ramy Bensebaini almost scoring at both ends, but they ultimately had to be content with a share of the spoils.
Union: Luthe – Friedrich, Knoche, Schlotterbeck – Trimmel (c), Prömel, Andrich, Lenz – Becker, Bülter – Awoniyi
Doubtful: -
Out: Gentner (calf), Ujah (knee)
Coach: Urs Fischer
Mainz have parted company with head coach Achim Beierlorzer after his side lost their opening two games of the 2020/21 Bundesliga campaign whilst conceding seven goals. The 05ers began the new campaign with a 5-1 win over minnows Havelse in the DFB Cup first round, but were soundly beaten 3-1 and 4-1 by RB Leipzig and promoted VfB Stuttgart on Bundesliga Matchdays 1 and 2 respectively. Assistant coach Jan-Moritz Lichte will take charge in an interim capacity until further notice.
Mainz had problems from the start of the match against Stuttgart as goalkeeper Robin Zentner denied both Orel Mangala and Wataru Endo inside the first five minutes before — completely against the run of play — Jean-Philippe Mateta nodded a center across the face of goal for Quaison to open his 2020/21 account with a header. Silas Wamangituka was spot on when he drove Gonzalo Castro's pass past Zentner to level with the last kick before the break. Kalajdzic made his first Bundesliga start and justified his coach's choice by latching onto Endo's perfectly weighted pass before clipping a ball into Didavi's path for the veteran to put Stuttgart ahead. Mainz's ambitions were dealt a decisive blow when Moussa Niakhate was sent off for a second bookable offense 13 minutes from time. Klimowicz and Kalajdzic had both found the net to leave Achim Beierlorzer without a job for the final 1-4.
Mainz: Zentner – Baku, St. Juste, Hack, Brosinski – Barreiro, Latza (c) – Onisiwo, Boëtius, Quaison – Mateta
Doubtful: Bell (match fitness), Fernandes (match fitness), Ji (knee), Kunde (match fitness)
Out: Niakhate (suspended)
Coach: Jan-Moritz Lichte

Union must be favorite to beat Mainz side that lost their leader and coach that went with them through a tough relegation battle in the last season. They must try to seize the moment and grab a victory and home win is our preferable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
