Union Berlin might need some adjustments to stop prolific Schalke's young American Matthew Hoppe on Saturday evening.
Goalkeeper Loris Karius, who joined in the summer on loan from Liverpool, made his Bundesliga bow for Union in their 1-1 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach a fortnight ago, coming on as a second-half replacement for Andreas Luthe after a collision. The latter was back in goal for last weekend’s narrow 1-0 defeat away at Mainz, which extended the Berliners’ winless run to four games but will miss this weekend for personal reasons. Although now down in ninth, they are only three points off Borussia Dortmund in sixth and on a club-record run in the Bundesliga of nine home games unbeaten.
Taiwo Awoniyi and former Schalke man Cedric Teuchert continue to lead the attack in the absence of Max Kruse, while at least one change is enforced in defense with Nico Schlotterbeck suspended. Florian Hübner is set to come in, while left wing-back Christopher Lenz could sit out of his third game on the bounce with a muscular problem. Urs Fischer’s side covers the most ground of any team in the league this season (74.6 miles per game).
Union: Karius - Friedrich, Knoche, Hübner - Trimmel (c), Gentner, Andrich, Ryerson - Ingvartsen - Awoniyi, Teuchert
Out: Becker (ankle), Kruse (thigh), Lenz (muscular), Luthe (personal reasons), Schlotterbeck (suspended), Ujah (knee)
Doubtful: Prömel (muscular)
Coach: Urs Fischer
Things are getting ever more desperate for Schalke, despite Hoppe's form. Their 3-0 loss at home to RB Leipzig last Saturday, combined with Mainz’s win over Union, leaves them five points adrift at the bottom – and nine to the relative safety of the play-off. Their hopes rest on the shoulders of teenage American striker Hoppe, who bagged a hat-trick in their sole league win in the last year. He is ably assisted - on the training ground for now - by club legend, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who at 37 is almost twice Hoppe’s age (19), has only featured for 10 minutes since returning to the club in January. The Dutchman hit 126 goals in 239 outings for the Royal Blues in his first stint at the club though (2010-2017).
Midfielder Nabil Bentaleb has also been brought back into the first-team fold. Despite the Leipzig defeat, coach Christian Gross is set to keep faith with his newly formed defense of William, Shkodran Mustafi, Matija Nastasic, and captain Sead Kolasinac as he seeks to turn the second-worst campaign in Bundesliga history around and perform a miracle in the final 14 games.
Schalke: Fährmann - William, Mustafi, Nastasic, Kolasinac (c) - Stambouli, Mascarell - Raman, Serdar, Harit - Hoppe
Out: Ludewig (foot), Paciencia (knee), Rönnow (groin), Sane (knee), Skrzybski (knee), Uth (thigh)
Doubtful: Becker (thigh), Bozdogan (ankle), Huntelaar (calf)
Coach: Christian Gross

Union has scored with every seventh shot on average this season, a return bettered only by leaders Bayern Munich (one in six). Schalke are the least clinical with a goal every 15 attempts. Guests are without a win in their last 20 Bundesliga away games (seven draws, 13 defeats), but they have never lost against Union (one win, two draws). The home win is our preferable betting option here.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
