Ivan Juric meets his mentor Gian Piero Gasperini in the lunch-time match on Sunday. Read our reasons for Verona vs Atalanta prediction and betting tips.
Ivan Juric was furious with Hellas Verona after their 3-2 defeat away to Sassuolo. ‘When we equalized, I thought we would go on to win it.’ Hellas twice clawed their way back into the game, but mere moments after the second equalizer, they gifted a corner for 3-2. “It’s not good, but I am still proud of my team because we dominated Sassuolo,” Juric told the media. “We gifted some goals too, but overall did well to control the tempo and stop Sassuolo playing their usual possession football. We did better over the 90 minutes, but when you gift those goals, you will pay for those mistakes. Our general play has improved vastly from the first half of the season, but luck hasn’t been on our side. On the winning goal, there were two big mistakes. Firstly, Mattia Zaccagni should’ve been more alert on that back-pass, then the corner wasn’t cleared with enough conviction.''
Juric thinks that with each next loss like this they are potentially ruining what they have done in the first part of the season. “It’s a pity, because we dominated the final half-hour, never letting Sassuolo get beyond midfield. When we equalized at 2-2, I thought we would go on to win it. Gifting points like that are annoying. Unfortunately, that often happens with us and Sassuolo. They’ve got great players and Roberto De Zerbi is a fine coach. I like Roberto, he has his ideas, we are from the same generation and have an open mind about tactics. I am concentrated on my team. We should’ve had three points because we were playing good football. When you do everything right and don’t win, you don’t make the step up.”

Gian Piero Gasperini ‘absolutely’ would’ve made the same decisions after Atalanta’s Champions League exit to Real Madrid, but regrets a lack of ‘precision.’ This was only La Dea’s second Champions League campaign and they reached the quarter-finals last season, but this time went out in the Round of 16 to Real Madrid, 4-1 on aggregate. While in the first leg, the game-plan was ruined by Remo Freuler’s controversial red card 17 minutes in, here Gasp opted to leave Duvan Zapata and Josip Ilicic on the bench, with Marco Sportiello rather than Pierluigi Gollini. With the benefit of hindsight, would Gasperini have made the same choices? “I absolutely would’ve made the same decisions. Unfortunately, the first goal, the penalty, and even the goal in the first leg compromised a qualification that would’ve been tough anyway. When you gift goals like that, it becomes even tougher,” the coach told the media. “It’s a pity, we felt that we could do better and take the game to Real Madrid. It went down the wrong path, which was partly our fault, and it became too difficult then. These experiences are always fantastic for the players, coach, and club, because we are up against the best on the international stage. We should still be satisfied, as we eliminated Ajax and got through a group with Liverpool. We hoped that we could’ve done better in both games against Real Madrid.”
Atalanta can now focus on finishing in the top four of Serie A for the third year running. “Now we’ve got Serie A until the Coppa Italia Final in May, so all our energy will go on that. I think we should emerge from this fixture with the right determination and energy to give our best there and qualify for Europe. Every team and individual player has to improve that to be competitive at this level. I remain convinced we could’ve done better, especially at a certain stage of the season. It has happened before that we don’t pass the ball cleanly and start to get frustrated. The lack of precision and technical errors are the biggest regrets.”
Atalanta (3-4-1-2): Sportiello; Toloi, Romero, Djimsiti; Maehle, De Roon, Freuler, Ruggeri; Pessina; Muriel, Zapata
Suspended: none
Injured: Hateboer, Sutalo

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
