Hellas Verona hosts Cagliari at the Stadio Bentegodi on Sunday hoping to gain important points for a place in Europe.
Ivan Juric’s side sits seventh in the Serie A table and has only lost one of their last five Serie A games. They bounced back from a winless run of three games with a 2-0 triumph over Atalanta last time. Atalanta dominated proceedings for an hour but paid the price for failing to take their chances, Josip Ilicic, Duvan Zapata, and Remo Freuler were made to regret wasted opportunities when Miguel Veloso converted a penalty. Mattia Zaccagni then sealed the result with a very well-taken goal, especially the first touch off the outside of the boot to control the Veloso assist. Veloso also rattled the woodwork and Marco Silvestri performed late heroics in Bergamo.
Hellas Verona has won seven of their last ten Serie A games against Cagliari. In the previous 20 games against the Sardinians, the Gialloblu had only won five times. The Gialloblu crashed out of the Coppa Italia against Cagliari last month, when the Rossoblu won 2-1 at the Sardegna Arena.
They have five players out of action with injuries and both Matteo Lovato and Federico Ceccherini in doubt for the game. Juric hopes to recover them both and has confirmed midfielder Darko Lazovic recovered from coronavirus. The Serbian midfielder has been unavailable since the last international break but has tested negative and must undergo the required medical examinations to be back against Cagliari.
Verona (3-4-1-2): Silvestri; Ceccherini, Dawidowicz, Lovato; Faraoni, Tameze, Miguel Veloso, Dimarco; Barak, Zaccagni; Di Carmine
Suspended: none
Injured: Cetin, Gunter, Benassi, Ruegg, Vieira, Kalinic
On a yellow card: Ceccherini
Cagliari coach Eusebio Di Francesco felt his side ‘threw two points away’ in their 2-2 draw with Spezia, decided by a last-gasp spot-kick. It was a hugely entertaining clash in Sardinia, as Cagliari fought back from a goal down to lead, only to be caught by a stoppage-time penalty. Simone Bastoni deserves much of the credit for the Spezia opener, as he started his run from midfield and placed an assist on a silver platter for Emmanuel Gyasi. Cagliari turned it around with two goals in six minutes, as Joao Pedro spun round to score, then Leonardo Pavoletti had his first goal in 18 months with a sensational back-heel flick. Deep into stoppages, M’Bala Nzola converted a penalty to give Spezia a point.
Cagliari has five players out of action due to COVID: Adam Ounas, Naithan Nandez, Gaston Pereiro, Diego Godin, and Giovanni Simeone. Zito Luvumbo has picked up an injury, Luca Ceppitelli, Ragnar Klavan, and Charalampos Lykogiannis are in doubt.
Cagliari (4-2-3-1): Cragno; Faragò, Klavan, Walukiewicz, Carboni; Marin, Rog; Zappa; Joao Pedro, Sottil; Pavoletti
Suspended: none
Injured: Ounas, Nandez, Luvumbo, Pereiro, Godin, Simeone

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
