Watford host Aston Villa at the Vicarage Road (Watford) in the 1st round of the 2021/22 Premier League season and the match kicks off at 3 pm (UK) on Saturday, August 14. Read our reasons for Watford vs Aston Villa prediction and betting tips.
HORNETS TO EXPLOIT VILLA’S SQUAD DILLEMAS
It’s the opening weekend of the new Premier League season and there should be plenty of optimism in the air at Vicarage Road on Saturday when newly-promoted Watford take on Aston Villa. The Hornets made an instant return to the Premier League by finishing second in the Championship and they have been busy in the transfer market, bringing in no fewer than eight players. As for Villa, this marks the start of life without talisman Jack Grealish, who has made a £100million switch to Man City, but the Villans have been investing that money back into the squad and they also have much to be excited about.
XISCO’S MEN TO BUILD ON LAST SEASONS STRONG FORM
The signing of Josh King from Bournemouth has boosted their firepower and Ismaila Sarr will be ready to show how much he has improved after a season of regular football in the Championship, having been one of their shining lights during their relegation campaign. Slovakia midfielder Juraj Kucka comes in from Parma, France Under-21s ace Imran Louza looks a solid recruit and former Tottenham full-back Danny Rose joined as a free agent.
Watford had the best defensive record in the Championship last season and conceding just 30 goals played a major part in them winning promotion as runners-up with two games to spare and keeping things tight at the back is still likely to be the main priority again. Xisco took over as manager in December and transformed the club’s fortunes but how will the relatively inexperienced Spanish coach cope in his first season in the Premier League?
THERE IS LIFE AFTER GREALISH FOR VILLA
The England midfielder’s exit has left a big gap to fill, but the Villans have been spending the money wisely and the arrivals of Emiliano Buendia and Leon Bailey are exciting moves. Both are creative players with bags of quality – midfielder Buendia was crucial in Norwich City's Championship-winning campaign last season while winger Bailey impressed at Bayer Leverkusen. Life without Grealish will be different for Villa, but there is talent in the squad and the future looks bright for Dean Smith’s men.
Villa came flying out of the blocks last season and boss Dean Smith will hope a kind fixture schedule allows them to do the same. Villans, who only survived relegation on the final day of the 2019-20 season but finished 11th last term, will believe they can improve on that. Their away form picked up towards the end of last season, as they recorded victories at Everton and Tottenham Hotspur, and they look like good value to start their 2021-22 campaign with three points.

Watford will no doubt see this as a good opportunity to make a positive start to the season against a new-look Villa side that could be without as many as four players from their best XI. Dean Smith will be confident that his much-improved squad depth will compensate for the potential injury problems at the start of this season. Under 2.5 goals paid out in all of Watford’s last eight matches of the season, and we’re not expecting their approach to change significantly.
BettingKick’s Watford vs Aston Villa prediction is: Under 2.5 goals

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
