Watford host Huddersfield at the Vicarage Road (Watford) in the 24th round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 3 pm (UK) on Saturday, January 16.
WATFORD VS HUDDERSFIELD MATCH ANALYSIS
The hosts head into this weekend after back-to-back defeats in the league and the FA Cup. They lost 2-1 to Swansea at the Liberty Stadium before exiting the FA Cup in Round 3 after a 1-0 defeat against Manchester Utd at Old Trafford. They are in 6th place in the league but risk losing their play-off spot if they don’t see of the Terriers on Saturday. As for the visitors, they come into this match also on the back of two defeats – against Reading at home (2-1) in the Championship and a League One side Plymouth Arg in the R3 of the FA Cup at home (2-3). They are in 13th and could finish the weekend in the top-half of the table with a win at Watford.
The Hornets are definitely looking to get back to top-flight immediately and are hoping that a change of managers will galvanize the squad as Vladimir Ivic was sacked after his side’s 2-0 defeat at mid-table Huddersfield in the reverse fixture in December, just four months into his reign. The Hornets have been doing alright, having in mind the injury problems they had, but it was not enough for Ivic to keep his job. They have taken a few steps back in the race for automatic promotion lately but got right back on track with a home win against leaders Norwich on Boxing Day.
However, they couldn’t repeat the feat in manager Xisco Munoz’s second game in charge against the second-placed Swansea. Munoz made just one enforced change to his team, bringing Nathaniel Chalobah into midfield to replace Etienne Capoue following his move to Villarreal. They started brightly when Tom Cleverley fired Watford in front before Swansea took control and Jamal Lowe's brace secured the three points for the hosts. Watford also had chances to spoil Man Utd’s party in the FA Cup next, but United reached the next round with an unconvincing win.
Huddersfield, on the other hand, look like they have accommodated to the new manager's ways after a disappointing start to the season. The club put their trust in Carlos Corberan, but it will take some time for the players to get familiar with what is asked of them. Against Reading, the Terriers, who had recorded five straight victories on home turf, looked on course for a sixth after Fraizer Campbell headed them into an early lead, but Joao’s two second-half goals sealed the win for the Royals.
However, their next game heaped more misery on Corberan’s side after Plymouth Argyle produced one of the shocks of the day in the FA Cup third round as the League One side knocked out much-weakened Huddersfield. The Terriers, who had made 11 changes from last week's home defeat by Reading, were twice ahead, but Plymouth leveled each time and eventually got the winner. Even if Corberan used the competition to give the fringe players a chance, they should have been more competitive on the day.
