WATFORD VS PRESTON MATCH ANALYSIS
The Hornets have stagnated a little after two consecutive wins in Rounds 5 and 6 and have managed only to draw two matches and record their 2nd defeat of the season against struggling Barnsley (1-0). However, they recovered with two consecutive home 3-2 wins against Stoke and Coventry, which put them into 2nd place, albeit shortly, as they followed the two wins with back-to-back draws against QPR (1-1) and Bristol (0-0) in midweek, and finished the week 13 in 5th place with 23 points. As for Preston, they have picked up 16 points so far and are 15th in the standings after suffering a heavy 0-3 defeat to Blackburn at home. It means that they have won only once at home this season, and have scored only once in six games at Deepdale.
The Hornets are definitely looking to get back immediately to the top flight and hope that a new manager Vladimir Ivic can set the foundations for their quick return to Premier League. Even with the likes of Dele-Bashiru, Masina, Perica, and Success still sidelined, the Hornets are doing alright, which is a huge sign of the quality of their set-up. Having lost ground on the title-chasers following a relatively poor run of form, they got back in the mix after two consecutive home wins, but fell down the pecking order again, after the latest goalless draw against Bristol.
Bristol and Watford extended their unbeaten Championship runs to four games each after a draw at Ashton Gate, but neither managers were too happy with the performances afterward. It was a match of half-chances between two sides occupying play-off places, and Vladimir Ivic’s men lost ground on the top two as they are now four points off league leaders Norwich.
Preston, on the other hand, have established themselves as a mid-table club in the last five campaigns as they have finished 11th,11th,7th,14th, and 9th, and the big question is if they can break into that top-six bracket this season. Alex Neil, the manager, remains faithful to the Lilywhites which signals the belief he must have in this crop of players. All bar two defeats (L7) of the season so far have been by single goal margin, and if they can find the way to turn them into draws or wins they could be closer to the top half of the table.
Defeat against the Rovers in midweek was one of those two defeats, where they just could not get anything from the game. Preston arguably had no way back into the game moments before half-time when they conceded a penalty, and Blackburn continued their free-scoring form in the second half with a dominant win. Preston have been on a win-lose-win-lose streak over the past fortnight or so and are seven points from the drop. Their away form is considerably better, and the Lilywhites will look to get more breathing space from the bottom.

Watford lost ground on their promotion rivals this week and will be keen to make amends on Saturday, while Preston face a tough task, albeit not an impossible one.
Watford’s last league win against Preston was in 2009 at Vicarage Road, failing to win in three meetings since (D2 L1). In the Championship, the Hornets have won 13 of their last 17 matches at their stadium.
Preston haven’t lost consecutive away Championship games since February, but this one may just be out of their reach.
