Watford host Reading at the Vicarage Road (Watford) in the 41st round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 7.45 pm (UK) on Friday, April 9. Read our reasons for Watford vs Reading prediction and betting tips.
Watford, who led courtesy of Ismaila Sarr’s controversial 32nd-minute opener, but eventually drew 1-1 at Middlesbrough on Monday, remain second and well clear of Brentford and Swansea below them despite failing to chalk up a seventh win in a row. On the other hand, in a must-win game, Reading secured arguably the biggest victory of the season, toppling Derby by three goals to one. Reading manager Veljko Paunovic praised the maturity of his players as they remained in 6th place, thus maintaining their Championship play-off chase.
The second-placed Hornets looked on course for a seventh-straight win when Ismaila Sarr’s fortuitous goal in the 32nd minute stood despite Boro’s claims for handball and offside. But ninth-placed Boro found an extra edge in the second half of the lunch-time kick-off and substitute Bolasie, on loan from Everton, headed in the equaliser with 12 minutes remaining to prevent Watford from making the five-point gap to leaders Norwich even smaller.
The game itself was far from entertaining and Munoz felt Watford's lack of creativity going forward was mainly due to the team they were up against. The manager felt his side could have offered more in attack and, although disappointed, he is now considering how Watford can continue to build for promotion. Confirming a place in the playoffs has all-but been achieved already and Munoz now intends to cement their place in the automatic promotion spots. Should he achieve that with time to spare, the Hornets will then consider if taking top spot is feasible.
Meanwhile, Veljko Paunovic decided to put Lucas Joao on the bench and brought George Puscas in to support Yakou Meite. It was a slow start, but eventually, the Royals got into the game when Michael Olise made it 1-0 just before the break. Puscas rewarded the manager for his decision by making it 2-0. Tom Lawrence scored for the visitors but Lucas Joao came off the bench and scored a much-needed goal for the team and his confidence with six games remaining.
The Royals did exactly what they needed to do for their play-off bid with an important victory at the Madejski Stadium, but with Barnsley and Bournemouth picking up points, not much has changed in terms of the table with Reading. However, It was a very good, mature performance which shows a promising fact that the Royals know they have a good opportunity ahead of them. Pauno’s men have a couple of teams to play at the top of the table and also teams like Cardiff who are still involved in the race so it's not going to be easy.

Watford meet Reading generally having the upper hand in recent meetings, with three wins from the last four matches. The Hornets ran out 4-1 winners in the last meeting at Vicarage Road, but the Royals triumphed 1-0 in the reverse fixture in October. Reading also have a slight edge in this fixture with 10 wins to Watford’s nine from 29 previous matches.
Since Xisco Munoz’s first game in charge on Boxing Day, Watford have won more points than any other side in the Championship (42) and were just short of recording six consecutive league victories for the first time since January 2011 under Malky Mackay. On the other hand, Reading’s dodgy away form in recent weeks has seen them claim just one win from their last five matches.
Everything but a host’s victory will be an upset here and we also expect a high-scoring affair, so the hosts’ win is an option. Nevertheless, BettingKick’s Watford vs Reading prediction is: Over 2.5 goals

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
