Watford host Sheffield Wed at the Vicarage Road (Watford) in the 39th round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 3 pm (UK) on Friday, April 2. Read our reasons for Watford vs Sheffield Wed prediction and betting tips.
Whilst the likes of Swansea and Brentford have stumbled in recent weeks, Watford are peaking at the right time in the Championship and thus ought to be brimming with confidence heading into the closing stages of the season. They are in 2nd place in the table after winning nine out of their last ten fixtures (L1) and are confident coming into the match against 23rd-placed Wednesday, who clinched their first victory with Darren Moore as a manager - two goals from Jordan Rhodes gave them a 2-1 derby win at Barnsley. Now, there's a chance to win the first back-to-back games since January 30 and February 2.
Following a dismal 2019/20 campaign that culminated in relegation from the Premier League, Watford are currently enjoying a fruitful season in the Championship. Despite some of the usual turmoil over the managerial position, the Hornets are in a healthy position. Indeed, with Xisco Munoz adapting to life at Vicarage Road well, action taken by the controversial Pozzo family does like it could pay off, even despite criticism following the sacking of Vladimir Ivic in December.
On a run of 13 wins in 18 games, the events of the weekend before the international break went their way too as Swansea City failed to match their trouncing of Birmingham, extending the gap between the two promotion hopefuls to six points. Set to face Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday afternoon, Watford will be determined to take a step closer to achieving their goal of promotion by picking up three points in this clash.
Meanwhile, the Owls gave themselves a glimmer of hope over the weekend with an impressive victory at Oakwell, where Windass played a big role in the win as he worked tirelessly up front as well as setting up the winner. Wednesday have now had two weeks between fixtures as Moore gets the chance to get more work done on the training ground, and Windass will be desperate to stay sharp ahead of nine huge games for the Owls.
However, the gap to safety has grown to six points and the Owls have a crucial clash with fellow strugglers Rotherham in midweek next. For Darren Moore, keeping Wednesday up is a huge but not yet impossible ask. If Wednesday do go down, his experience in the third tier will certainly give them a head start. Sheffield Wed’s squad appears in drastic need of an overhaul and if funds are limited, Moore may well be the best man to rebuild.

Watford last hosted Sheffield Wed in the league back in May 2015, drawing 1-1 on the final day of the season. The Owls are winless in their last four league games against Watford (D2, L2) since a 1-0 win in December 2013. Since Xisco Muñoz’s first game in charge on Boxing Day, Watford have won more points than any other side in the Championship (41) and are looking to record six consecutive league victories for the first time since January 2011 under Malky Mackay.
Everything but a host’s victory will be an upset here and we also expect a high-scoring affair, so over 2.5 goals is an option. Anyhow, BettingKick’s Watford vs Sheffield Wed prediction is: Watford win
