Schalke will try to kick-start their relegation fight away to Werder Bremen on Saturday.
Bremen are no strangers to battling for survival themselves, having stayed up via the play-offs at the end of last season. Florian Kohfeldt's side is not out of the woods yet in 2020/21 either, but last week's convincing 4-1 triumph away to Hertha Berlin was a much-needed confidence boost that allowed them to pull six points clear of the drop zone. It was their second victory since the turn of the year, while Josh Sargent was back among the goals for the first time since Matchday 6 with a long-range stunner.
The 20-year-old should return to the starting line-up after being rested, especially as his replacement, Davie Selke, was taken off injured after just 32 minutes. Four of Sargent's eight top-flight strikes across 55 appearances have come as a substitute. The American has scored twice in the league this term. Ömer Toprak, who likewise scored and was substituted off injured in that game, is another doubt.
Bremen: Pavlenka - Veljkovic, Moisander, Friedl - Gebre Selassie (c), Bittencourt, Eggestein, Mbom, Agu - Sargent, Schmid
Out: Augustinsson (thigh), Erras (muscular), Füllkrug (ankle), Groß (muscular)
Doubtful: Möhwald (groin), Rashica (thigh), elke (thigh), Toprak (ankle)
Coach: Florian Kohfeldt
Schalke may have lost 4-0 at home to Bayern Munich on Sunday, a result that leaves them 10 points adrift of outright safety, but the Royal Blues can still take heart from a performance in which they produced some promising moves against the European champions. Still, Gross is aware that only wins will do if the club is to mount a serious survival bid, and he will be looking to 19-year-old Californian Hoppe to continue his rich vein of scoring form, with recent arrival Huntelaar still struggling to shake off a calf complaint.
Huntelaar has registered four goals and five assists in his previous nine Bundesliga meetings with Bremen. New signing William, on loan from Wolfsburg, is expected to slot straight in at right-back and provide attacking width down the flank, with Sead Kolasinac doing the same on the opposite side.
Schalke: Fährmann - William, Kabak, Nastasic, Kolasinac (c) - Stambouli, Serdar - Raman, Uth, Harit - Hoppe
Out: Bentaleb (not included), Boujellab (ill), Ludewig (foot), Paciencia (knee), Sane (knee), Skrzybski (knee)
Doubtful: Huntelaar (calf), Rönnow (groin)
Coach: Christian Gross

Werder has won seven of their last 10 Bundesliga games against Schalke, including the previous two. Schalke have the worst away record in the league (W0, D2, L6). The home win is our preferable betting option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
