Werder Bremen will have to change something dramatically if they want to pass Ibrahima Konate and RB Leipzig's defense in their DFB Cup semi-final on Friday. Read our reasons for Werder vs Leipzig prediction and betting tips.
Bremen's run in the cup could provide a welcome distraction from their spiraling league form. A 3-1 defeat away to Union Berlin on Matchday 31 at the weekend was their seventh consecutive Bundesliga loss, leaving them looking nervously over their shoulders at Cologne, just one point below them in the relegation play-off spot. A morale-boosting win over Leipzig, then, would not only give them a cup final to look forward to against either Borussia Dortmund or Bundesliga 2 promotion hopefuls Holstein Kiel on 13 May, but it could also give them momentum going into their vital final three games of the season.
Coach Florian Kohfeldt has named almost what many would consider his best team in the last two games. With Marco Friedl sidelined, one change at least will have to be made in defense. After record winners Bayern Munich (20), Bremen have won the DFB Cup more often than any other team (six). Their last triumph was in 2009 final with a 1-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen. Bremen hasn't conceded a single goal in the DFB Cup this term, scoring eight in the process. Josh Sargent is the team's top scorer with two of those.
Bremen: Pavlenka - Veljkovic, Groß, Moisander (c) - Gebre Selassie, Eggestein, Möhwald, Augustinsson - Sargent, Rashica - Füllkrug
Out: Friedl (knock), Woltemade (knee)
Doubtful: Plogmann (knee), Toprak (calf), Veljkovic (broken nose)
Coach: Florian Kohfeldt
Leipzig's form in the league has been mixed of late, with three wins, two draws, and two losses in the last seven games. They got the victory when it mattered last Sunday, though, with a 2-0 triumph at home to VfB Stuttgart ensuring the Bundesliga title race remains alive going into the final three matchdays. However, the cup remains Die Roten Bullen’s best chance at earning the first trophy in the club's history. They have already seen off Bundesliga opposition in the competition in Augsburg (3-0) and Wolfsburg (2-0), as well as second-tier Nuremberg (3-0) and Bochum (4-0).
Konate started ahead of Dayot Upamecano at the weekend before a half-time switch, but the giant pair could well feature together from the off in Bremen. Captain Marcel Sabitzer is also set to return for Julian Nagelsmann after not being risked last time out with a calf problem. Alexander Sörloth now appears to be the first-choice striker ahead of Yussuf Poulsen. This is just the second time Leipzig has reached the last four of the DFB Cup; they previously finished as runners-up after losing to Bayern in the 2018/19 final. Nagelsmann's side, who are also yet to concede in the cup this season, have won seven of their 10 meetings with Bremen, including each of the last four.
Leipzig: Gulacsi - Orban, Konate, Upamecano - Mukiele, Sabitzer (c), Kampl, Angelino - Olmo, Nkunku - Sörloth
Out: Szoboszlai (groin)
Doubtful: Klostermann (thigh)
Coach: Julian Nagelsmann

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
