West Brom host Newcastle at the Hawthorns (West Bromwich) in the 27th round of the Premier League and the match kicks off at 12 pm (UK) on Sunday, March 7. Read our reasons for West Brom vs Newcastle prediction and betting tips.
West Brom slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Everton despite a vastly-improved showing in yet another match overshadowed by a video assistant referee controversy. The Baggies had come into this game on an unbeaten run of three games, with clean sheets in their past two. However, they remain in 19th, nine points behind 17th-placed Newcastle, who they host on Sunday. The Magpies have had plenty of time to recover from Saturday's 1-1 draw with Wolves but have been rocked this week by reports of a bust-up between manager Steve Bruce and winger Matt Ritchie hitting the national press.
Sam Allardyce replaced the sacked Slaven Bilic after West Brom had picked up seven points from their opening 13 games, but they have now only gained an additional 10 points in Allardyce's 14 matches in charge. In their last three games, West Brom battled to draws with Man United and Burnley and clinched a fortuitous victory over Brighton. However, after a midweek’s loss, the home clash with Newcastle on Sunday sticks out as a vital fixture in the relegation dog-fight.
It was another frustrating evening for the Baggies, but it was another good performance and they should not be too disheartened. There is a concern as to whether they can produce again on Sunday lunchtime but, despite the result, I felt it was the right call by Big Sam to keep the same side. However, Sam Allardyce's side have two games in the space of four days and that could take its toll on the Baggies. He and his coaching staff now need to get them ready physically and mentally to another massive game on Sunday afternoon.
On the other hand, Newcastle have been deprived of attractive football and money being put into the club on a consistent base for years now. The fans have become frustrated and annoyed with both owner and manager over the last 12 months with the club seemingly going backwards, despite some smart signings, on paper at least, such as Ryan Fraser, being made last summer. However, with a manager who has a record of keeping teams in the league, there may be room for optimism about the Magpies staying up.
After a draw against Wolves Newcastle currently find themselves deep in a relegation battle with 12 games of the campaign remaining, having won only two of their past 15 league matches to slip to within three points of the bottom three. Bruce's position has been brought into ever sharper focus by the form as his side face 19th-placed West Brom on Sunday without injured players who include leading scorer Callum Wilson, Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin.

West Brom meet Newcastle having previously won seven points from their last four Premier League home games against the Magpies (W2 D1 L1), one more than they had from their first seven against them in the competition (W1 D3 L3). On the other hand, Newcastle are looking to complete their first Premier League double over West Brom since the 2008-09 season, after celebrating 2-1 in the reverse fixture in December.
Victory for West Brom over the Magpies could set up a three-way contest with Fulham to clinch safety, but defeat would likely mean it is a two-horse race for 17th place. We expect a low-scoring affair here so the BettingKick’s West Brom vs Newcastle prediction is: Under 2.5 goals
