West Brom host Sheffield Utd at the Hawthorns in the 3rd round of the 2021/22 Championship season and the match kicks off at 8 pm (UK) on Wednesday, August 18. . Read our reasons for West Brom vs Sheffield Utd prediction and betting tips.
WEST BROM VS SHEFFIELD UTD: FACTS & STATS
Last season’s Premier League meetings between West Brom and Sheffield Utd were two home wins – 1-0 to the Baggies and 2-1 to the Blades. Sheffield Utd are looking to win consecutive league games against West Brom for the first time since December 2000 under Neil Warnock. However, it would not be an easy task since West Brom last lost consecutively on Wednesday in a league competition way back in May 2014. Also, in eight H2Hs between the two sides, the record is exactly even. Both sides have won three games, lost three and drawn two. The Baggies fans might be concerned that their side have now conceded two goals in four straight Championship fixtures, but given the fact that the Blades are yet to score this season, they might be just the perfect opponent.
WEST BROM VS SHEFFIELD UTD: PRE-MATCH TALK
It’s been a lively Championship return for West Bromwich Albion (WBA) who’ve picked up four points from two 4+ goal thrillers. That’s a repeat of their opening results in their last promotion-winning campaign (2019/20), so they’ll likely be content with that start. West Brom raced into a 2-0 half-time lead on Saturday as they secured a 3-2 victory against a talented Luton side in a game that was more comfortable than the scoreline suggests. However, the Baggies seem to have adapted well to life under new coach Valerien Ismael and are unbeaten in their first two league games of the season.
Meanwhile, Slavisa Jokanovic fielded four natural strikers in his starting XI to take on Swansea on Saturday evening, but the Blades could still only manage a goalless draw in South Wales. Sheffield Utd are yet to score a goal in their opening two league games and have claimed just a single point against two opponents who will likely finish the season in the bottom half. One positive is that their draw at Swansea last weekend stretched their unbeaten away run in this division to ten matches. Notably, they restricted their opponents to under 1.5 goals in six of the last seven fixtures in that sequence.
WEST BROM VS SHEFFIELD UTD: TEAM NEWS
West Brom could be without Scottish winger Robert Snodgrass and Saint Kitts and Nevis international Romaine Sawyers. Other than that there are no known issues and manager Valerien Ismael is expected to have a fully fit squad at his disposal. He could opt against resting players and name an unchanged starting XI in midweek, given the pedigree of the opposition.
As for Sheffield Utd, Slavisa Jokanovic could revert back to a flat 4-3-3 system in midweek with John Fleck returning to partner Oli Norwood and Sander Berge in central midfield. Knee injuries will keep defensive duo Jack O'Connell and Enda Stevens out of action for the rest of August and most of September. Also, Oliver McBurnie is widely expected to replace veteran striker Billy Sharp in the starting XI.

West Brom, like Sheffield Utd, will be aiming for a quick return to the Premier League. The Baggies have been impressive in front of goal at the start of the season, and they are likely to stick to their attacking style of play. On the other hand, United obviously struggle in front of goal - therefore, we do not believe that they are capable of spoiling West Brom’s party at the Hawthorns.
