West Ham host Southampton at the Olympic Stadium (London) in the final 38th round of the Premier League and the match kicks off at 4 pm (UK) on Sunday, May 23. Read our reasons for West Ham vs Southampton prediction and betting tips.
A 3-1 comeback victory over West Brom has put West Ham in pole position to claim a Europa League spot and also their highest Premier League placing since 1998/99, despite failing to win seven of their last 12 league games - a run that ended their Champions League dreams. Preventing a third straight home loss for the first time this season and cementing the European spot would make for the successful final day. Meanwhile, despite back-to-back home wins in May, Southampton have taken the joint-fewest points this calendar year. After their 2-0 defeat to Leeds in midweek, the Saints will be glad to see the back of this campaign which been a long, hard slog for Ralph Hasenhuttl's side.
West Ham have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last ten Premier League matches, but have picked up 31 points on the road this season – their best away points haul in a single campaign in the competition. However, David Moyes’s men remain prone to defensive errors and can ill afford any more slip-ups if they are to qualify for Europe. Having said that, Southampton is a big price to improve their modest away record on the final day.
However, West Ham are tantalizingly close to a European return after they came from behind to beat relegated West Brom at The Hawthorns. David Moyes' side are guaranteed at least seventh place - and a spot in the new Europa Conference League play-off round - unless results go against them significantly on Sunday. A point at home to Southampton would ensure the sixth spot and a place in the Europa League group stage. It would also mark their highest position since 1999.
As for Southampton, the Saints had scored six goals in their previous two home games but were unable to find the same form against Leeds. With their top-flight status secured though, Southampton remain 14th in the Premier League with one game of the season remaining, and the midweek’s home defeat had little riding on it. However, by succumbing to Leeds on home soil on Tuesday night, Hasenhuttl again highlighted the issue his side have and why it must be rectified next season.
From their 37 league games, Saints have conceded 65 times, including nine in one game against Manchester United. Only West Brom (73), who will be playing in the Championship next season, have conceded more goals than Southampton in the top-flight this term. Their woes at the back have also been highlighted by the lack of clean sheets that they have been keeping in recent months. Although they have managed nine Premier League shutouts this term, they have only kept one in their last 20 league matches.

West Ham meet Southampton unbeaten in their last six Premier League meetings with the Saints, winning five in a row before their 0-0 draw in the reverse fixture. Moreover, since drawing 3-3 in May 1994 in their first such meeting, none of Southampton’s last 17 away Premier League games against West Ham have ended level, with Saints winning just four of those (L13).
West Ham have scored exactly three goals in each of their last three home meetings with Southampton, who have the second-worst defensive record in the Premier League this season, and should be confident of finishing the season with a win.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
