The in-form Freiburg will try to continue their good form visiting Wolfsburg on Sunday.
Wolfsburg still has the third-meanest defense in the Bundesliga. They kept their sixth clean sheet of the season last week as they beat Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 and moved up to fourth in the table. Ridle Baku got the goal in that game from his new advanced position on the right, with Kevin Mbabu now slotting in at right-back. Striker Wout Weghorst may have been kept at bay in that match, but the Dutchman has 12 goals for the campaign – the only Wolves player with more than three – and is averaging better than a goal every other game in 102 appearances for Wolfsburg (54).
Weghorst is joint-fourth in the Bundesliga scoring chart with 12 goals and has an impressive record against Freiburg with three goals and two assists in five games. Wolfsburg has the league’s third-tightest defense with only 19 goals conceded. The 12 let in from open play is an outright league low. This is Wolfsburg’s 400th home game in the Bundesliga, where they are still unbeaten this season (W5, D3). The Wolves have so far scored 699 goals.
Wolfsburg: Casteels (c) - Mbabu, Lacroix, Brooks, Otavio - Schlager, Arnold - Baku, Gerhardt, Steffen - Weghorst
Out: Roussillon (match fitness)
Doubtful: Ginczek (back)
Coach: Oliver Glasner
Freiburg has also been in good form and has moved up to ninth – only five points off their opponents. They came from behind to beat regional rivals VfB Stuttgart 2-1 last weekend, with Florian Müller saving a penalty, meaning the Black Forest club have lost only one league game (away at Bayern Munich) since November. It was Grifo who set up Nils Petersen in the 1-1 draw against the Wolves in the reverse fixture – one of four assists this season – and the pair are Freiburg’s joint-top scorers with seven goals. Grifo’s seven goals are the most he’s ever scored in a Bundesliga campaign. His best haul in any division is 14 for Freiburg in Bundesliga 2 in 2015/16.
Petersen has lost his starting place to Ermedin Demirovic, who had a hand in both goals against Stuttgart. Wooyeong Jeong got the winner and has been praised by coach Christian Streich, so will likely continue in attack. The return of right wing-back Jonathan Schmid from injury after three games out is also a boost.
Freiburg: Müller - Lienhart, Schlotterbeck, Gulde - Schmid, Santamaria, Höfler, Günter (c) - Jeong, Demirovic, Grifo
Out: Kwon (knee)
Doubtful: Flekken (elbow), Sallai (ankle)
Coach: Christian Streich

Freiburg is unbeaten in five games against Wolfsburg (W2, D3), having lost seven out of the previous nine (D1, L1). Their three wins at the Volkswagen Arena is more than they’ve managed away at any other team in the Bundesliga under Streich. Both teams to score is the most reasonable betting option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
